Steele’s is an asset-based business which utilizes a fleet of dedicated equipment, which includes company-owned assets and owner-operator-owned equipment working as sub-contractors along with carrier partners to provide safe, timely and competitive freight delivery services throughout Alberta. Our main area of service occurs in the busy corridor between Calgary, Red Deer, and Edmonton, and we do have staff and/or drivers based in each one of these major cities.

Responsibilities include onboarding and training drivers, overseeing preventative maintenance scheduling for fleet assets, and ensuring safety and compliance. This position also involves planning and organizing the cross-dock floor to maximize its usage.
Job Title: Operations Supervisor
Job Responsibilities:
1. Supervising Dock Operations
Supervise, plan, assign and review the work of staff engaged in shipping, receiving, scheduling transportation and routes, and other related activities.
Scheduling daily dock tasks and establishing the priority in which the tasks are to be completed.
Working with Sales and Operations to source cross-dock customers to add an annual set budget of new recurring customer cross-dock revenue.
Work with dispatch operations to secure the supply of empty trailers needed for tasks while maintaining a smooth flow of trailers in and out of our docks.
Ensuring all freight originating at the terminal has dimensions captured and maintains weekly DIMS compliance metrics.
Ensuring compliance across all manifesting functions (inbound & outbound) at the dock level
Prioritize the unloading and loading of freight, moving all damaged freight and returns appropriately.
Recognize risks, problems, and work collaboratively with other stakeholders to achieve practical and speedy resolution.
2. Fleet Management
Monitoring of fleet activities in the ELD Dashboard and Fleet management system to identify issues or upcoming maintenance and inspections.
Coach drivers on HOS and DVIR to ensure 100% compliance
Visually inspect assets
Keep records of trailers in use and locations
Coordinate repairs of assets with approved vendors
Monitor and report fleet mileage per week and safe miles driven, along with revenue and cost per KM.
3. Driver Team & Relations
Monitoring and enforcing activities and ensuring compliance with drivers and equipment.
Completing the qualification and training of new drivers
Monitoring monthly training that must be renewed in the next 30 days and coordinating the same.
Supporting dispatch on issues reported with drivers
4. Health, Safety & Compliance
Lead the Health and Safety policies and training, and ensure 100% compliance with Health & Safety policies
Collaborate with other TM’s on HSE initiatives.
Ensure compliance with policies, procedures for safety and security, standards and regulations in force and participate in their improvement
Investigate and resolve all incidents and accidents for people, vehicles, equipment and freight claims (OS&D).
5. People Management
Supervision of Dock Workers, both employee and contractor/agency, directly and indirectly.
Provide daily guidance and motivation to Dock Workers (employees and agency workers) to ensure achievement of operational objectives for the terminal.
Works with the team and others, internal and external to the terminal, to resolve roadblocks to achievement of daily operational objectives.
6. Communications
Ensure and monitor the continuous flow of communications and information relating to freight delivery so the appropriate parties are aware of solutions/actions to be taken to ensure safe and timely operations.
Communicating with dock operators, Steele’s divisions and resolving various problems and related complaints and implementing corrective measures and process improvements
7. Reporting
Works with the Terminal Manager to track monthly performance stats for the dock.
Daily capacity reporting, complete and submit daily activity logs.
Tracking of daily revenue generated by cross-dock operations.
Ensuring daily dock audit compliance.
8. Other Duties
Some heavy lifting may be required.
May be required to complete load transfers by hand.
Forklift work as required to help the dock daily
9. Qualifications/Skills
5+ years' experience in a terminal setting in the transportation industry.
Trained in the Transportation of Dangerous Goods
Forklift certified.
WHMIS certified.
Strong interpersonal, communication (verbal and written), and customer service skills.
Strong problem-solving skills.
Customer and Sales oriented.
Ability to multitask and prioritize workload.
Safety oriented
Proficient use of English, both written and spoken; additional languages considered an asset.
Task-oriented– self-motivating.
Familiar with National Safety Code and Provincial Transportation rules and regulations as they may apply.
10. Education and Experience Requirements
Graduate/ post-secondary education (general stream), or a combination of education and experience. However, a minimum of secondary education.
Previous Transportation or operational experience is preferred; various roles within transportation would be beneficial.
Experience with TMS / WMS systems is a definite asset.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
Experience leading a team of front-line employees and drivers.
Strong leadership skills, including the ability to get things done through others and people development.
Experience /Contributing to the development of and managing an annual operating budget.
