Employment type – Ongoing – Full time (35 hours)
Salary – Departmental Professional Officer – Grade 8, Base Salary ($171,261– $173,174), plus employer’s contribution to superannuation and annual leave loading

Your role

Lead and deliver legal policy and reform projects that shape the national regulation of the legal profession. This is a high-impact role supporting the Legal Services Council and key committees under the Legal Profession Uniform Law. You will drive legislative and non-legislative initiatives, provide expert advice, and contribute to national consistency in legal regulation. It is a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of law, policy, and governance while mentoring a skilled team.

What you’ll do

As part of the Legal Services Council Secretariat, you will lead the development and implementation of a portfolio of legal policy initiatives and reforms that support the objectives of the Legal Profession Uniform Law.

You will manage legislative and non-legislative projects, provide policy advice, and deliver secretariat support to the Legal Services Council, its Admissions Committee, and the Law Admissions Consultative Committee.

You will also:
Lead the preparation of policy papers, briefing notes, discussion papers, and correspondence on complex legal and regulatory matters
Develop and implement strategies for monitoring and evaluating policy outcomes and risks
Facilitate stakeholder engagement and public consultations, including interjurisdictional collaboration
Provide high level secretariat support to advisory committees and working groups
Represent the Secretariat in meetings and consultations with senior government, legal and regulatory stakeholders
Contribute to the strategic planning and governance of the Secretariat, including work planning and reporting
Play a key leadership role in managing the Secretariat, including mentoring and supporting junior staff and managing direct reports.
Work as part of a small, expert policy team embedded in the NSW Department of Communities and Justice and enjoy a collegial, flexible and professional environment focused on integrity, public service, and legal excellence.

What we’re looking for

Tertiary qualifications in law and experience in legislative and policy development
Knowledge of the Legal Profession Uniform Law or a comparable legal regulatory framework
Proven ability to manage complex stakeholder relationships across jurisdictions
Strong leadership, written communication and analytical skills in a legal policy context
