Make a meaningful difference to the lives of Australians in need
Life at Mission Australia
When you join the team at Mission Australia, you become part of a community who are determined to end homelessness and ensure people in need can thrive. United by our Christian purpose and values, we stand together with anyone who needs us, for as long as they need us.
Your Opportunity
This is an on-site position based in Darwin and offers the opportunity to contribute to improving the lives of young people at risk of or experiencing homelessness in the Northern Territory.
As Project Officer, you will be part of a small, supportive team working on a Scoping Study that seeks to understand the accommodation needs of young people at risk of homelessness across urban, regional, and remote communities. Your role will involve connecting with young people, service providers, Elders, local government and community organisations to gather insights and perspectives that will help shape future services and policies. You will assist with planning, research, interviews, stakeholder engagement and more – and your voice, and your capacity to hear others, will matter every step of the way.
This role offers both structure and flexibility with the expectation of approximately 30 hours per fortnight, and is well-suited to someone who brings curiosity, compassion, and cultural awareness to their work.
Occasional travel to places like Alice Springs, Katherine and Tennant Creek will be required.
Your Key Responsibilities
Support the planning and coordination of project tasks, including schedules, meetings, and documentation.
Organise and participate in consultations with young people, Elders, service providers, and government agencies.
Undertake desktop reviews of policies, research, and data related to homelessness amongst young people and accommodation services.
Participate alongside outreach activities to meet young people where they are, building trust and encouraging open, informed conversations.
Coordinate and facilitate culturally sensitive interviews and focus groups, both in-person and online ensuring everyone feels heard and respected.
Liaise with a broad range of stakeholders including schools, First Nations organisations, local and Territory government agencies, and existing Mission Australia services.
Support data collection and thematic analysis across qualitative and quantitative sources.
Contribute to the preparation of project outputs including summaries, reports, maps, tables, and visual presentations.
Collaborate with other Mission Australia teams and services, learning how different programs support young people.
Requirements for Success
Diploma-level qualification (or working toward one) in social work, community studies, project management, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
Experience and knowledge of First Nations cultural systems and protocols.
Demonstrated ability to coordinate or contribute to community-based projects and consultation activities.
Experience engaging respectfully with young people, particularly those with lived experience of homelessness, and First Nations communities.
Proven skills in desktop research and field-based data gathering, analysis, and reporting.
Strong communication skills, including the ability to draft written content and summarise complex findings.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and online communication tools with solid administrative and organisational capabilities.
Willingness and ability to travel to regional NT locations and conduct outreach activities where young people are based.
Full driver licence with no restrictions
Before starting work with us, you will need to undertake a national police history check, qualifications, and referee checks, and have a clearance to work with children/vulnerable people.
Your Benefits
To ensure our employees feel valued, empowered, and celebrated, we provide a range of employee benefits including:
Rewarding work – every day you know you’re making a real difference
Free external, confidential counselling
Volunteering opportunities
