You will partner with AWS stakeholders to develop regional and site-specific development strategies enabling the construction and operation of AWS datacenters and infrastructure. You will lead environmental due diligence for site selection and acquisition, develop and execute regional and site-specific environmental permitting strategies, manage environmental compliance during design and construction, and prepare for data center operations. This role requires regular engagement throughout the development lifecycle with multiple AWS stakeholders including Real Estate, Legal, Risk, Water, Design, Public Policy, Construction, and Operational teams, as well as external stakeholders including regulatory agencies, consultants, and contractors.

A successful candidate in this role will have a proven track record of delivering multiple, high-priority projects with tight timelines that require strong communication with partner teams, outside consultants and counsel, and regulatory agencies. The candidate must have a strong understanding of multi-media United States environmental permitting, remediation, and compliance requirements associated with large-scale infrastructure including experience with Clean Water Act (CWA) 404 and NPDES permitting.

The Amazon Web Services (AWS) Environmental team is looking for an experienced environmental professional to manage environmental requirements during datacenter and infrastructure development in the Americas.

Key job responsibilities

Assess environmental risks and requirements and develop mitigations and strategies to support data center siting and development strategies and site-specific project delivery.
Lead technical aspects of environmental due diligence, including Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments, regulatory and permitting evaluations, and natural, biological and cultural resource evaluations.
Deliver environmental permits, approvals, and plans to enable on-time and compliant construction and operations for new data center locations and expansion of existing sites.
Communicate environmental requirements, risks, and activities to internal and external project partners.
Coordinate with partner teams including Design, Water, Legal, Risk, Power, and others to optimize site designs to consider natural resource or operational constraints.
Develop site development and permitting strategies that are environmentally responsible and sustainable while meeting project timelines.
Lead regulatory agency interactions and negotiations in support of environmental permit acquisition and regional development strategies.
Develop, manage and track metrics to evaluate project success

The AWS Environmental team is an expanding and dynamic team that is critical to enabling AWS’s growth around the world, as well as ensuring compliance of AWS’s global operations, including physical data centers, as well as other AWS facilities, customer-facing enterprises and products. The team has responsibility for architecting and implementing AWS’s global environmental programs. This includes defining and implementing risk management and compliance systems and driving their continuous improvement; setting and refining global policies and procedures; overseeing the development of standards, tools, auditing and metrics, and employee training; ensuring effective engagement by environmental teams on global initiatives, including those that are part of Amazon’s ambitious sustainability goals; providing specialist expertise; and engaging with all AWS business units to provide scalable and effective compliance strategies that support current and future business objectives while ensuring compliance with environmental regulations.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree in engineering, environmental scienc, or related discipline.
7+ years of experience delivering multi-media environmental due diligence, permitting, and compliance for existing sites and new development.
5+ years experience conducting environmental due diligence for greenfield and brownfield sites, including Phase I and Phase II ESAs and support for investigative and remedial activities.
At least 3 years of project or task management experience for environmental permitting and/or due diligence projects.






PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Data center or critical infrastructure due diligence, design, construction, and/or or risk assessment experience strongly preferred.
Experience in multiple states within the US (preferably in OH, MO, and IN)
Experience managing and/or supporting community/public interactions.
Experience with Smartsheets or other project management software.
Up to 25% travel
Experience working with large teams on a diverse slate of projects.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $98,700/year in our lowest geographic market up to $210,800/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
