The New Zealand Policy Research Institute (NZPRI) provides multidisciplinary, inquiry-driven research with social impact at both the national and international level. Our research groups engage over 70 research experts to provide research that ticks the boxes for both academic rigour, as well as being relevant to policymakers and the community in general.
We place emphasis on a collaborative approach and rank engagement with external stakeholders as a high priority. The Institute provides commissioned work for a range of external clients, with recent examples including work for the Ministry for Women, Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, and the Human Rights Commission. Nga haepapa matua | Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will:
Contribute to NZPRI's applied research portfolio in public economics, health, education, and labour market
Lead and contribute to projects that use IDI data to investigate pressing questions in health and social policy
Publish in high-quality journals and develop outputs that inform both academic debates and government policy
Collaborate with NZPRI colleagues and external stakeholders to expand the Institute's research impact
Participate in seminars, workshops, and conferences, both in New Zealand and internationally

We are seeking a Research Fellow for a fixed-term appointment of one year.
The candidate must have:
PhD in Economics
Strong applied econometrics expertise, including causal inference methods
Demonstrated expertise using Stats NZ's Integrated Data Infrastructure (IDI), including hands-on experience with interRAI data
Technical skills in Stata, SQL and LaTeX
Experience conducting research with direct policy implications
A strong record of academic publications and other research outputs
Experience developing research outputs that are both academically rigorous and policy relevant
Knowledge and awareness of undertaking research within the context of Aotearoa New Zealand, including health and aged care policy
Experience presenting research at international conferences and active engagement with the academic community
