Job Description:
Position Purpose summary:
The Thrift Store Clerk provides service to customers, sort incoming product and assists in the ongoing retail operations of The Salvation Army Bowmanville Thrift Store.
Accountabilities:
Greet customers and donors in a friendly manner and provide excellent customer service.
Assist in keeping the Store tidy, clean, organized and stocked of merchandise.
Sort & Price donations as directed.
Responsible for accurate completion of all customer transactions including cash and debit/credit sales with minimal voids, overages or shortages.
Adhere to store policy regarding cheques, credit cards, refunds, voids and holds.
Pay attention to store security, by monitoring activity within the store.
Answer the phone efficiently in a polite and professional manner.
Inform your supervisor of all customer complaints, comments and concerns regarding customer service, prices, merchandise, etc.
All other store related duties as assigned.
Health & Safety
Contribute to the safety of staff and customers (e.g. snow removal, clear fire exits, cleans spillage; no obstacles inside/outside the store).
Maintain an attractive organized appearance of the store, may be asked to tidy up and restock shelves, clean, sweep, dust and mop as necessary; on a rotational basis clean the lunchroom, washroom and other common areas.
Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
MANAGERIAL/Technical Leadership RESPONSIBILITY:
This position reports directly to the Thrift Store Manager
WORKING CONDITIONS:
This is a temporary, part-time position based on 30 hours per week.
Schedule will include weekdays and Saturday’s and may vary from week to week.
Flexibility in scheduling is required.
Ability to stand for long periods with frequent twisting, bending, crouching, and reaching is required.
Ability to lift/move 20 to 2+ pounds
The Supervisor will set the hours of work and work schedule.
Normal hours of work: work will be scheduled as per the Thrift Store hours of operation. The hours of work and hours of operation are subject to review as required.
The above responsibilities must be performed in keeping with The Salvation Army’s Mission, Vision and Values, in a professional manner, upholding our code of conduct.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Submit as required a Regular Police Record Check that is acceptable to The Salvation Army in its sole discretion.
This position is funded in part through the Canada Summer Jobs Program and the following represents the applicant criteria:
aged 15 to 30 years at the beginning of the employment period;
be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has
been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment*; and,
holds a valid Social Insurance Number; and,
be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
International students are not eligible participants. International students include anyone who is temporarily in Canada for studies and who is not a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada.
An ongoing condition of employment is the ability to maintain immigration status to legally remain and work in Canada which is supported by valid immigration documents.
Education, Qualifications and Certifications:
Completion of some high school course work.
Experience and Knowledge:
Some related experience in warehouse processing or goods distribution would be a definite asset.
Knowledge of lifting guidelines would be a definite asset.
Cash handling experience is required.
Basic math skills are required to calculate discounts and percentages as well as reading skills.
Knowledge and experience using a cash register, debit machine and/or credit card processing is a definite asset.
Skills and Capabilities:

Represent the organization in a professional and engaging manner.
Brand awareness would be an asset.

Compensation:
The target hiring range for this position is $17.20 to $18.76 with a maximum of $22.51.
Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
