POSITION SUMMARY: Diagnose and repair vehicles and equipment malfunction on all major systems including gas and diesel engines, transmissions, brake systems, differentials, drivelines, generators, rear-end assemblies, carburetors, and hydraulic, pneumatic, fuel, ignition, electrical, Tier 4 emissions and DEF systems and cooling systems on light and heavy-duty vehicles.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: The following statements are illustrative of the essential functions of the job and do not include other non-essential or peripheral duties that may be required. Performs scheduled preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment inspecting for potential failures and safety concerns. Diagnoses and identifies failed vehicles and equipment repairing, overhauling or replacing defective components or parts. Operates vehicles and equipment for trouble diagnosis, road tests, travel to job sites and to move in and out of the shop. Attends daily meetings with R&B personnel to stay aware of projects in progress Consults with users to identify problems and creates solutions Keeps daily records of maintenance, repairs, parts, vehicle odometer/hour meter information Operates a service truck or wrecker as necessary Performs repair and maintenance at remote job sites Changes equipment accessories for seasonal uses Keeps shop clean, organized, safe, and parts stocks May perform some welding and machine work incidental to the repair work in progress
JOB QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of: Knowledge of the proper assembly, adjustment and repair of automotive, truck and related mechanical equipment Knowledge of the proper assembly, adjustment and repair of gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, differentials, airbrake systems and heavy construction equipment Working knowledge of diagnosing Tier 4 emissions and DEF injection systems
Skill in: Skill in the use of automotive shop tools and instruments, welding and cutting devices
Abilities: Ability to diagnose defects in gasoline and diesel-powered equipment Ability to follow safety practices common to the trade Ability to operate heavy equipment safely in and out of shop Ability to accept change, criticism, open to new ideas Ability to maintain a working relations with coworkers
Education and/or Experience: Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job. High School diploma or equivalent; trade/vocational school preferred 3-5 years experience as a light and heavy full line mechanic, including hydraulic systems 1 year welding experience
Licenses or Certificates: Valid Class A CDL within 6 months of hire Must meet the qualifications for a CDL driver under the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations Must obtain Air Brake Inspector Certificate within 1 year of hire Must take and maintain First Aid and CPR certification within 1 years of hire Must take MSHA training annually
Physical Demands: Walking or standing for long periods, laying on a creeper or underneath equipment, bending body downward and forward by bending legs and spine Handling, seizing, holding grasping, or otherwise working with hand or hands Fingering, picking, pinching, working primarily with fingers Climbing ladders Lifting unaided up to 50 lbs, lifted aided over 50 lbs Ability to work
Work Environment: Approximately 75% of the work is performed in a shop environment, 15% in the field, and 10% driving a motor vehicle. Exposures to loud noises, heights, smoke, electrical shock, harmful chemicals, and/or cuts and abrasions are recurrent. Field repairs require exposure to dirt, dust, mud, grease, and inclement weather. Safety precautions must be continuously followed in this position.
Other: May be required to work after regular hours and on weekends, with short notice and be on-call. Mechanics without a valid CDL may not operate a commercial motor vehicle outside of the shop or the enclosed Road & Bridge yard.
