Senior Data Engineer – Sydney (Hybrid)
Shape the future of data at one of Australasia’s leading law firms
At Wotton Kearney, we are known as much for our people as we are for our legal expertise. With 750+ lawyers across Australia, New Zealand and Asia, we partner with the world’s biggest insurers and businesses to solve complex problems. Behind the scenes, our IT team is helping to transform how we use technology and data and we are now looking for a Senior Data Engineer to play a key role in building that future.
The role
We are seeking a Senior Data Engineer to join us in a pivotal, stand-alone role. This is a unique opportunity for a "do-er" who enjoys the challenge of building from the ground up. Initially, you will be the sole driver of our data engineering efforts, establishing the foundations of our internal function. As the business evolves and the function matures, you will have the opportunity to scale and lead the team you helped create.
As Senior Data Engineer, you will design, build and maintain the data platforms that underpin smarter decision making across the firm. This is a hands-on role where you will work closely with stakeholders in legal, finance, operations and IT to deliver scalable solutions and unlock the value of data.
Your day to day will include:
Designing and developing scalable data pipelines and ETL processes
Building and optimising medallion data architectures for analytics, reporting and machine learning
Partnering with analysts, data scientists and business stakeholders to understand needs and deliver robust solutions
Ensuring data quality, integrity and security across systems
Integrating data from internal and external platforms including practice management and document management systems
Contributing to a modern cloud-based data platform using Azure (or similar)
Evaluating and implementing new tools and technologies to enhance the firm’s data capabilities
What we are looking for
We want someone who is not just technical, but also curious and collaborative – a data engineer who can turn business problems into smart data solutions. You will bring:
4+ years experience in data engineering or similar roles
Strong SQL and Python skills
Experience with cloud data platforms (ideally Azure) and modern data stack tools (Databricks, Snowflake, dbt etc.)
Knowledge of data warehousing, data lakes and real-time processing
An understanding of data governance, privacy and compliance
Experience in professional services (legal, consulting, finance) is highly regarded
