This is a technical, hands-on role at the centre of how Mercury engages with regulators, government agencies, and the wider energy sector. You’ll join a team of three, delivering on a strategic work programme that supports Mercury’s position as a respected and influential voice in the sector.


You’ll play an important part in ensuring Mercury continues to contribute meaningfully and confidently to public policy and regulatory discussions, including electricity markets, climate policy and wider environmental and national policy initiatives. This is a role that is all about implementation, delivery and high-quality regulatory engagement.


There is flexibility for this role to be based in Auckland, Tauranga, Hamilton or Wellington.


Tāu e mahi ai | What you'll be doing:

Preparing influential, technically robust submissions and consultation responses.
Representing Mercury in regulatory processes, industry working groups, and sector forums.
Maintaining strong working relationships with peers across the sector, including regulators, agencies, industry associations and other participants.
Monitoring policy and regulatory developments both domestically and internationally to help keep Mercury ahead of emerging issues.
Working collaboratively across the business — particularly with Sustainability, Wholesale Markets, Customer and Finance teams — to ensure implications of policy changes are well understood.
Contributing your expertise to cross‑functional teams responding regulatory priorities.

Mōu | About you:

We are looking for strong experience in the following areas:

NZ or equivalent overseas regulatory, public policy or government affairs related role, experience in the energy or telco sector is helpful, but not essential
Strong understanding of policy development and regulatory change processes
Exceptional written communication skills – especially in crafting submissions or formal policy documents
Proven ability to build trusted relationships across agencies, sector organisations and internal teams
Strong research, analysis and problem-solving capability
