Employment Type: Part-Time (3 days/week) Fixed Term – until May 2027

UNSW isn’t like other places you’ve worked. It is home to many leading Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander scholars who do vital work for their communities and the nation more broadly. UNSW is passionate about creating a vibrant, inclusive environment where our Indigenous staff can shine. Our Indigenous Employee Network meets monthly to cultivate community and connection. We also hold regular yarning circles. We understand the importance of cultural and ceremonial responsibilities, offering 10 days of cultural leave to honour these commitments.

About the role:

A Senior Research Fellow (Level C) is expected to make independent and original contributions to the research efforts of their discipline and contribute meaningfully to the organisational unit or inter-disciplinary area in which they are based. An academic at this level is expected to play a major role in research, including the exercise of some leadership in research, and have advanced capability in scientific and technical writing. For more information about the exact tasks involved in the role, please review the job description. This role in particular was created to support the execution of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health research grant funding.

This is new position, funded until May 2027. We are looking for someone who can work 3 days a week – we are flexible on the days. The position is hybrid (cannot be fully remote).

Who You Are:

We are looking for someone who is aligned with UNSW’s vision and values and who holds the following:

A PhD in a biomedical, health, or related discipline, supported by extensive professional experience across academic research, scientific writing, grant development, and research operations
Demonstrated commitment to proactively maintain up-to-date discipline knowledge, including advances in research communication, ethics, and culturally safe engagement, particularly in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health contexts
Proven research track record with high-quality outputs, including peer-reviewed publications, successful competitive and philanthropic grant applications, and contributions to translational and community-impact research
Capacity for research leadership, including mentoring of junior researchers, supervising technical staff, managing research infrastructure, and contributing to the design and implementation of complex research initiatives
Demonstrated success working collaboratively across disciplines and institutions, including clinical, Indigenous health, philanthropic, and biomedical sectors
Advanced capability in manuscript preparation, competitive grant submissions, and the development of culturally sensitive, accessible lay summaries for a range of audiences
Highly developed interpersonal and organisational skills, evidenced through experience in coordinating grant programs, managing scientific facilities, leading research communications, and supporting ethical research governance
Whilst you might see this role advertised more broadly, this role needs to be based in Sydney, NSW (Kensington Campus). Candidates need to have full working rights for this position – no sponsorship is available.

How to Apply: please submit your resume and a cover letter to bring your experience to life – feel free to address the points in the “who you are” section of the job ad if that helps structure your cover letter.
