This role offers an exciting opportunity to join a team of 11 scientists in the Molecular Biology laboratory at SRUC Veterinary Services. Providing a high-quality diagnostic testing service, the lab processes large numbers of samples using new and established molecular test methods and utilises the latest instrumentation for automation of some procedures. It is a fast paced, dynamic working environment and teamwork is critical for the successful delivery of the service. Senior scientists working in this section are expected to demonstrate exemplary leadership and to have good working knowledge and understanding of molecular test processes and instrumentation. Also essential is a meticulous attention to detail and excellent time management/organisational skills.
The post holder will have line management responsibility for three laboratory scientists within the Molecular team. They will also share responsibility for the general day-to-day running of the lab and for the management of laboratory instrumentation such as automated liquid handling robots, nucleic acid extraction systems and PCR instruments. Other duties include the routine analysis of samples for the detection of bacterial and viral causative agents of animal disease, using molecular biology techniques.
Duties to include:
Line management, supervision and training of scientific staff
Organisation of molecular biology lab IQA/ring trials
Instrument management and calibration
Troubleshooting problematic assays
Allocating daily work schedules
Deputising for the Laboratory Supervisor
Preparation of samples for testing, operation of liquid handling robots
Nucleic acid extraction, conventional and real-time PCR, gel electrophoresis
Analysis of test results and preparation of reports
General lab duties (reagent preparation, stock control)
Routine maintenance and cleaning of laboratory equipment
Communication with internal and external clients
Working to ISO17025 Quality Assurance standards
The post-holder will perform additional duties as directed from time to time by the Line Manager. The post holder must use their initiative in the conduct of their work and apply sound judgement at all times to ensure that they conduct themselves within the framework of SRUC regulations and procedures.
