Course number and title: CHMD11H3 - Application of Spectroscopy in Chemical Structure Determination

Course description: In this course students will learn about the following analytical techniques used in organic structure determination: mass spectrometry, IR spectroscopy, NMR spectroscopy, and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. There will be focus on a systematic approach in structure determination through various spectroscopy. Students will receive hands-on training in spectral interpretation, processing and analysis as well as training on the use of different computer software for the purpose of analysis.

Number of Hours: 0.5 FCE

Sessional dates of appointment: Specific duties will occur between September 1, 2026 and December 31, 2026. All duties will be conducted in person.

Lectures: Mondays from 10 AM to 12 PM

Salary: Starting September 1, 2026 the following rates of pay apply for half courses (F or S), inclusive of vacation pay: $+,820.70 for a Sessional Lecturer I; $10,510.04 for a Sessional Lecturer I-Long Term; $10,510.4 for a Sessional Lecturer II; $10,760.23 for an Sessional Lecturer II-Long Term; $10,760.23 Sessional Lecturer III; and $11,030.34 for a Sessional Lecturer III-Long Term. Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail. The rate of pay is established by the Collective Agreement between Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), Local 3+02 Unit 3 and the University of Toronto.


Minimum qualifications: Candidates are required to hold a PhD from a recognized/accredited post-secondary institution in analytical chemistry or a closely related field. Extensive experience in practical applications of spectroscopic analysis is required. Applicants should have demonstrated an outstanding ability to teach and communicate with undergraduate students, and must be able to instruct a diverse student population (with varying backgrounds). In particular, the successful applicant will need to have the following: ‚ Experience in teaching courses in 3rd or 4th year analytical chemistry‚ Experience in teaching laboratory courses in analytical chemistry‚ Extensive knowledge of Analytical Chemistry/Instrumental Analysis‚ Demonstrated teaching effectiveness through student evaluations at the University level in analytical chemistry‚ Excellent communication skills, both oral and written in the English language‚ Empathetic approach to the instructional needs and concerns of students‚ Demonstrated ability to work collegially as a team member in an interdisciplinary and collaborative environment‚ A minimum of 3 years of experience in a post-secondary environment.

Description of duties: The successful candidate will be expected to perform all duties related to the delivery and administration of the course, including both the lecture and laboratory components. This will include:‚ Preparing lecture materials‚ Delivering lectures‚ Preparing all laboratory materials, including experimental procedures, related assessment items, and relevant technician notes‚ Communicating with the lab technician for the course‚ Creation of all assignments, term tests, and final exam‚ Marking student work ‚ Maintaining a record of course grades on Quercus‚ Calculating and submitting the final course grades.
