Job Description

Overview

Our team is looking for a confident, passionate educator to join our teaching team, and help in delivering STEM classes to neurodivergent students, at the same time as establishing our first Bay of Plenty location.

Job Summary

Our team is looking for a confident, passionate tutor to join our teaching team, and help in delivering STEM classes to neurodivergent students.

Job Description

Our company:

We're a small creative team that delivers STEM workshops to students and communities across New Zealand.

We began in Auckland * years ago teaching after-school coding classes, and since then have expanded our offerings to also teach robotics, electronics, 3D Design and printing, science, Minecraft, and more! Our classes have expanded from running purely after-school to also running in school holiday periods, in school classrooms during the day, and in community venues for pop up family events. Our goal is to make STEM exciting and accessible for all, ensuring all our attendees leave our workshops feeling confident and proud of their newly developed skills.

This role:

In this role, you will work 1:1 and in small focus groups with learners who have additional needs and/or disabilities.

As the newest team member in our Bay of Plenty region, you'll also be responsible for running after-school classes, community events, liaising with stakeholders, and engaging in general administration and operations.

Our 1:1 students are all amazing! They're passionate about technology, have amazing support around them (teachers, parents, psychologists, OT's, facilitators & of course us - Brain Play) and nearly all are happy, positive, and eager to learn.

We do have some students and classes who are more challenging (low motivation, shorter attention span, emotional outbursts). These students often have a history of trauma. It's essential our new team member is willing to unconditionally support students and views their challenges under an empathetic and solutions focused lens.

Handovers and team teaching are provided to ensure you feel prepared and confident for these challenging cases.

What we're looking for:

We are looking for someone with experience working with young people who have a disability, or who are neurodivergent. Someone who is positive, can adapt quickly, is supportive & understanding, doesn't fluster when presented with challenges, and enjoys building relationships with students.

Job Location:

We travel for work visiting students at home, at school, and in community spaces.

You'll see the same students at the same day and time each week and we try to group students by their region to reduce travel in between.

During the school holidays we switch over to run pop up workshops for community members of all ages (parent & child focus).

Responsibilities include:

Organising activities and equipment (choosing from our activity bank) with students’ individual needs in mind
Visiting students at school, at local libraries, online, and in-home
Delivering 45 minute - 2 hour classes to students
Administration work - keeping notes, taking photos, booking sessions, booking make up sessions, emails
Team catch ups - once per fortnight with our wonderful team to catch up, discuss ideas, provide feedback and work through any challenges and most importantly share our wins!
Leading pop up mainstream events and classes in community spaces (after-school classes & holiday workshops)
Operations associated with starting a new location - meetings, coordinating equipment, supporting sales & strategy
Next steps:

To apply for this job please make sure you meet the following, do not apply if you cannot confidently tick all of these boxes:

Have availability 3 days per week / roughly 15 - 20 hours (this can grow as the region does)
Have experience working with students who are neurodivergent or have a disability
Have STEM experience (coding, robotics, 3D printing, Minecraft, science etc)
Have experience working in education settings
Have great leadership skills - confidence, adaptability, solutions focused, able to manage a group / new situation effectively
Have experience working unsupervised and independently, without feeling flustered
Have the ability to bring positivity and resilience to every workday
Be confident communicating with and tracking interactions with customers and stakeholders
Have your own private & reliable mode of transport - non-negotiable, do not apply without this
Have experience running events / operations - allowing you to see a project through from outreach, to planning, to execution
Benefits:

Once fully trained, the hourly pay rate for this role jumps to $32.80 (training is six - eight weeks)
We pay for travel - per km travelled and also time spent in the car
All training is paid, and can be partly done from home
We will pay for your first aid certificate, flu jab, and an AutismNZ training course
You get to play Minecraft for work - our favourite perk
Christmas & New Year closure - we shut for the holidays (late Dec - early Jan)
This role can be built up to full time hours for the right person! Over the next 6 - 12 months
We look forward to welcoming you into our team.
