Position purpose:

The incumbent is responsible for supporting student wellbeing and success through health education and/or health promotion initiatives, programs and projects while representing the University of Ottawa and Student Life sector. The incumbent also assists with event planning and delivery, presentations and workshops in addition to other health promotion activities. Ensures that all initiatives align with the principles of a health promoting campus. The HPS must provide direct interventions with students in distress or those requiring assistance to determine the appropriate referrals.

In this role, your responsibilities will include:

Customer service: Oversee and provide support to the student-led Health Promotion Centre in delivering quality customer service to visitors of the HPC. Coordinate the centre by providing health information, resources and referrals to appropriate health professionals for advice. Create a welcoming, supportive and educational environment that encourages student engagement, participation and help seeking behaviours. Demonstrates compassion, and support in a non-judgmental approach on a variety of health-related topics affecting students. HPS provides direct interventions with students in distress or those requiring assistance. HPS must communicate accurately and assess student’s health needs carefully on an individual basis, delivering appropriate health information and contacts depending on their needs. The incumbent must exercise independent judgement, problem solving and resourcefulness in order to determine the most effective information to deliver.

Operations: Performs a variety of tasks to support and maintain the Health Promotion Centre including inventory maintenance of health resources and ensuring that health resources are up-to-date and reflective of current trends. Display information and resources in a creative and welcoming manner. This includes assigning and scheduling student staff, recommending topics and events, developing content, delivering workshops, webinars, information sessions or other initiatives, and hosting events, virtually or in person. Develop and deliver interactive and evidence-informed programs and initiatives to student groups, including student leaders and other stakeholder groups as applicable. Collaborate with campus partners and community agencies in the delivery of public health and health promotion activities; maintain relationships with campus stakeholder groups to identify opportunities to expand or enhance health education activities and to optimize the impact of public health and health promotion activities.

Human resources: Responsible for the hiring, onboarding, orientation and supervision of all student staff and volunteers. Address student staff issues that impact optimal functioning of the center and HP programs.

Development: Participates in the developing, implementing, coordinating and evaluating of wellness trends and programming initiatives. Assists in the planning of wellness related programs and events.

Resource management: Develops and leads Peer Education training. Supports team leaders in the supervision of Peer Educators.. Makes recommendations to the manager to adjust resourcing as required.

Planning: Ensure PE education and awareness materials and tools are current with emerging health issues affecting student wellness in higher education. This includes but is not limited to: global health, ****** health, mental health, drugs and alcohol, nutrition, tobacco, physical activity, stress, sleep, etc.; Attends social activities/volunteer appreciation events. Assist in the planning of wellness related programs and events. Research and make recommendations for health education interventions for the collaborative stepped care mental health service delivery model.

Public relations: Represent the service and the University of Ottawa during events and receptions by connecting with students and participants. Actively participate in professional organizations, cultivate partnerships, and collaborate with campus and community partners. Collaborate with other units to deliver programs that build campus capacity to support student wellbeing. Develop and collaborate on projects that promote wellbeing in learning environments.

Reporting: Track HPC visits and report to the HP manager. Conduct program evaluation and make recommendations on program improvements. Conduct surveys, e-scans, focus groups or other in order to identify emerging trends and students needs and make recommendations for program content and event development. Advises as to the most suitable approaches to best meet student health and wellness needs. including

Project Management: Develop evidence-informed, programs, educational presentations, workshops, events, and services based on relevant, measurable, and practical health outcomes. Ensure access to programs for all uOttawa students. Deliver cost-effective, evidence-informed programs. Create, maintain and revise health promotion content and educational or awareness tools.

Communications: Participate on or lead / chair workgroups, committees and team meetings. Assist in maintaining Health Promo’s social media and web presence. Prepare newsletters, reports, publications and other written work as required and in collaboration with a shared service model.

Administrative Tasks: Performs a variety of administrative tasks to support the operations of the department/program/event, such as entering, updating and analyzing data, drafting and preparing a variety of documents and managing schedules and mail, in keeping with uOttawa quality standards. Drafts and updates documents for internal use on procedures, processes and systems related to the incumbent’s responsibilities.

What you will bring:

Bachelor’s Degree in a health related discipline or an equivalent combination of education and work experience;

Most relevant field areas include health sciences, public health, health promotion, health policy, or health education;

Must be able to communicate effectively and concisely, both orally and in writing in French and English;

Minimum three years related health promotion work experience, in a higher education environment;

Supervisory experience to effectively manage student staff and volunteers;

Knowledge of the ACHA Standards of Practice for Health Promotion in Higher Education (SPHPHE);

Knowledge of health promotion, behavior change, population-based theories and models, environmental management strategies/socio-ecological model and health promotion programs/initiatives.

Demonstrated skills in a variety of educational methods including presentations, workshops, trainings, and individual behavior change sessions;

Experience in program development, workshop delivery, design and evaluation including assessment design and implementation. Experience in coordinating small- and large-scale events for a student population. Specific experience in working with a diverse student population is required.

Expertise in one or more student wellness priority areas: mental health, ****** health, substance use, etc.

Ability to work evenings and weekends as required
