Staff Accountant
Job Summary: The Staff Accountant position is responsible for the accurate and timely reporting of more significant areas of the GAAP and statutory financial reporting and controls is expected to independently respond to questions and inquiries, investigate and resolve reporting issues, and provide support to the other Finance department professionals.
Major Accountabilities
• Prepare all financial statements (monthly, quarterly and annual), including Statutory, GAAP and Consolidated financial reporting for all Canal companies
• Prepare annual and quarterly statutory statement filings.
• Responsible for monthly general ledger journal entries, reconciliation of accounts and other accounting operational and reporting activities
• Responsible for federal and state tax accounting, including monthly and quarterly tax provision preparation, and coordination with external tax resources
• Manage financial reporting templates and update or redesign as business needs grow or change
• Support the development and execution of financial internal controls
• Assist in the completion of audit items for the external audit and state examinations including the organization of and communication between the Company and the auditor, tracking of deliverable items, and handling follow ups questions and responses
• Identify and report changes related to regulatory reporting, Statutory and GAAP accounting standards and their impact on the Company
• Support the investment and expense accounting functions
• Perform other duties as assigned by Management
Qualifications
Education/Training Requirements: Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance required.
Experience/Specialized Skills: Minimum two years of financial statement, accounting or financial information experience required. Prior insurance company experience preferred. Tax accounting experience preferred. Advanced computer skills (word processing, spreadsheets, databases, Internet, e-mail) required.
Special Considerations
Physical Requirements: Constant use of vision, hearing, and communication (oral and written in person and via telephone). Frequent concentration, standing, walking, handling, reaching, and grasping. Occasional bending, kneeling and lifting (up to 25 lbs.) Heavy use of computer and office equipment.
Travel/Hours of Service: Occasional travel may be required. Periodic work outside of standard business hours or on weekends may be required.
