You are

A Summer Access Worker. You will report directly to the Program Manager, Recreation, Leisure and Accessible Sport You will provide support in areas of social integration and personal care to assigned consumers, at Residential Camp, All Abilities Day Camp, Community Day Camp, and Deaf and hard of hearing camp. Summer Access staff is responsible for the general welfare; safety, health and well-being of assigned consumer(s) and will assist with various areas of program delivery when required.

The term employment will start in June and end in August.

Your Role
Consistently responsible for direct (“hands on”) support and or verbal encouragement to consumers while participating in summer leisure, recreation and life-skill programs.
Direct hands approach will include daily hand over hand assistance during activities.
Physically pushing/maneuvering manual wheelchairs during an activity.
Regularly walking with consumer or pushing/maneuvering a manual wheelchair to and from different program sites.
Regularly participating with consumer during program activities to ensure complete program integration. Perform 1-2 person lifts and transfers to and from a wheelchair throughout various activities which include but are not limited to horseback riding, canoe, trampoline, swimming pool, water slides, gym floor etc.).
Verbal encouragement will include using an Augmentative Communication Device, ASL or voice to motivate consumers, keep individual on track with activity, and explain camp/game rules/expectations, provide support through positive feedback and general conversation.
Regularly responsible for providing direct hands on and or verbal support to consumer with varying degrees of complexity in activities of daily living.
Direct hands on support will include the following: Pivot from wheelchair to toilet, wiping the individual after a bowel movement or urination, assisting consumer with personal hygiene (gender specific as required).
Regularly assist with all aspects of undressing/dressing.
Directly changing or assisting person change from soiled clothing to cleaned clothing on a regular basis.
Utilize equipment such as a Hoyer-lift, bath chair, and other adapted equipment for personal care usage.
On a required basis, performs hands on approved and taught stretches to consumer.
Physically assist individual in the shower/bath while attending Overnight Camp.
Directly provide hands on support on a regular basis with all aspects of tube/oral feeding; this will include receiving URIS training for tube feeding procedures, setting up meals, cutting food, and directly feeding.
On a regular basis physically assist with personal hygiene which includes but is not limited to brushing teeth, washing face and hands, and brushing hair.
On a daily basis lift/transfer consumer, on a regular basis provide night-time assistance; this will include turning consumer at night, providing support for homesickness or other emotional stress.
Consistently responsible to provide direct supervision to consumer while attending overnight/day camp/Independence for Youth.
Direct supervision includes the physical presence and participation of staff in all areas of a summer camp program, to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the consumer.
This will include receiving URIS training for Seizure Disorder, Tube Feeding, and Life-Threatening Allergies.
Oversee/provide minimal assistance to consumer while taking oral medication; minimal assistance refers to pulling out medication from consumer’s personal belongings i.e. knap-sack, lunch bag etc., and or placing the medication on consumers hand and physically lifting the hand to mouth.
On a regular basis implement strategies/technique such as Non-Violent Crisis Intervention/WEVAS, redirection, time-outs, removal from program and/or discussions to offset or reduce high levels of inappropriate behaviour.
Establish a respectful relationship with consumer (s).
Assist camper to engage in cooperative group play and activities.
Assess environment and camper to determine consumer’s level of independence.
Provides specialized training to participants (interpreter/life-skills).
Provide Supervisor with a summary report of ongoing activities and progress.
Communicate with families regarding needs and or behaviors of your assigned consumer(s).
Must be adherent to and compliant to confidential information, including privacy legislation and all other policies and procedures of governing bodies.
Establish professional working relationships with camp employees, associated programs and organizations.
Document all incidents/accidents that occur and report them immediately to the direct supervisor.
Adhere to the guidelines of Leisure and Recreation, as well as the policies and procedures of Manitoba Possible.
Assist the Recreation Facilitator and/or Recreation Coordinator with various areas of program delivery when required.
What You Know
University degree in social science, nursing, education or relevant field, including or a combination of 1-4 years of directly related experience and education
Experience with and willing to assist consumer with activities of daily living (dressing, feeding, mobility, transferring, washroom)
Experience and knowledge working with individuals with disabilities
Residential Camp/Day Camp experience preferably in the role of camp counselor/integration coordinator
Strong leadership and communication skills with sensitivity and empathy to diversity
Ability to work individually or as part of a team
Have flexibility to work varied hours including, overnights, weekends, evenings and days
Current standing in Basic First Aid and CPR required
Non-violent Crisis intervention or WEVAS an asset
Valid Manitoba Driver’s License and access to own vehicle
Basic knowledge and understanding of ASL, Deaf culture and French an asset
