Department Information
The Department of Finance has the mandate to provide leadership and direction to the public service in all areas of finance and human resource management. This mandate includes negotiating major financial arrangements with the federal government, providing analysis and advice to the Financial Management Board, and ensuring that financial and information resources are managed effectively, efficiently and economically. This mandate also includes the recruitment and retention of a competent public service that is representative of the people it serves and the development of programs and services that effectively serve the human resource needs of the public service.
Job Information
Join our team and play a key role in ensuring compliance with tax legislation and supporting the collection of vital revenues for the Government of the Northwest Territories. As a Tax Officer, you'll work on diverse tasks such as monitoring tax remittances, conducting desk audits, and assisting taxpayers with accurate calculations. This position offers a mix of analytical work, client interaction, and problem-solving in a dynamic environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Monitor and reconcile payroll, fuel, and tobacco tax remittances for accuracy.
Perform desk audits and inspections to ensure compliance with legislation.
Assist taxpayers with registration and interpretation of tax requirements.
Investigate discrepancies and recommend corrective actions or refunds.
Prepare reports, maintain records, and support year-end processes.
Key Qualifications:
Completion of Business or Accounting Degree, or similar and two (2) years of experience working in a financial office environment.
Similar Degrees could include, but are not limited to, Finance and Commerce.
Equivalencies:
Completion of a Business or Accounting Diploma, or similar and four (4) years of experience working in a financial office environment.
Completion of a Business Administration Certificate or similar and five (5) years of experience working in a financial office environment.
Completion of a Bookkeeper & Financial Officer Training course and six (6) years of experience working in a financial office environment.
Completion of a high school diploma and six (6) years progressively responsible financial office experience.
All other equivalencies will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
