Teacher of Students with Vision Impairments
The Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments uses strength-based and trauma informed approaches and a universal design framework to support classroom teachers and support staff working with students with low vision or who are blind including those with additional complex needs.
The Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments collaborates with classroom teachers to support student success in the classroom environment including providing and adapting instructional materials in a variety of alternate formats including: digital, adapted print, auditory and tactile materials. This teacher provides individualized instruction in areas of the Expanded Core Curriculum such as the use of access technology, self-advocacy, braille, independent living, and orientation and mobility skills. Additionally, based on the students individual strengths and stretches, provides individualized opportunities for students to develop the core competencies.
The Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments consults regularly with case managers; to develop and implement Individual Education Plans, Primary Learning Plans and Positive Behaviour Support Plans. This teacher enables student access to prevention and intervention related supports and services as per student social, emotional, physical, mental well-being. This teacher coordinates specialized services such as orientation and mobility, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, and augmented and alternative communication speech and language pathology services.
