Assistant Director Research and Partnerships
Campbell Park - ACT $115,8++ - $130,733 (EL 1) + Super The Role The Assistant Director Research and Partnerships manages a small specialist team tasked with implementation of the various activities associated with Defence's health research governance framework. This is an essential element to enabling internal and external researchers to delivery high quality research on priority areas of health as related to the National Defence Strategy. The position requires a sound knowledge of health research, research governance processes and policy interpretation and development. The position will exercise a considerable degree of independence and perform a leadership role as they are the key point of contact for the Defence Health Research Steering Group. The position requires the ability to demonstrated sound judgment and decision making to provide expert research policy advice. You will act as partnerships manager and knowledge liaison between policy/program areas and the research sector, to support the delivery of evidence-based health policies and programs, influencing health strategies as well as identifying and reviewing research priorities aligned to Defence strategic intent. The position will implement robust standards and research governance processes and have input to data governance practices and processes to support health research. The role will also support and enhance research science and innovation opportunities with internal and external stakeholders. You will oversee secretariat functions for a health research steering group, managing member stakeholder input and feedback to the agenda and quality assurance of the agenda and meeting papers. About our Team Joint Health Command (JHC) is responsible for the delivery of military medicine and healthcare services to Australian Defence Force (ADF). Through the delivery of best practice health services, JHC enables a healthy, ready, and supported Force from enlistment through to transition. As part of Defence People Group, we make a direct contribution to the ADF’s operational capability and provide crucial support to the warfighter. Health Protection and Policy Branch, within JHC, supports ADF capability through stewardship, health surveillance, research, prevention and health promotion programs, policy and senior technical/medical advice. The Directorate of Health Research is responsible for:
Setting the strategic agenda for Defence health research.
Reviewing and updating research governance structures processes and creating partnerships that enhance the capability of JHC to deliver strategic research.
The conduct, commissioning and facilitation of health research, including quantitative and qualitative research, data management, analysis and reporting.
Engaging with internal and external research partners to undertake health research design, delivery and support to JHC.
The dissemination and translation of health research that improves both Defence force capability and individual member health.
Our Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge of the research environment i.e. best practice approaches, standards and legislative arrangements related to the conduct of research, to shape the Directorate's research policies and processes. This knowledge will assist in shaping the Directorate of Health Research's (DHR) research agenda so it delivers impact and scale on the Defence Health System and ADF members. You will be consultative and have excellent stakeholder communications, and understand strategic challenges both at an enterprise and Group/Command level and the ability to problem solve. The ideal candidate:
Has demonstrated understanding or experience in leading and managing health-related research.
Has an understanding of the standards that guide research conduct such as the Australian Code for the conduct of research and the National Statement on the Ethical Conduct of Human Research.
Has demonstrated capacity to engage positively with critical stakeholders, i.e. research partners across government and academia.
Has excellent writing skills, including the ability to explain complex technical ideas clearly and succinctly.
Has demonstrated people management skills and ability to lead a high performing, cohesive team.
Is passionate about research and the development of a robust evidence base for informing policy, programs and practice.
