Job Description
Sheppard, a global Am Law 50 firm, has an opening for an Assistant General Counsel in any of our U.S. offices including Century City, Chicago, Dallas, Del Mar, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, Orange County, San Diego (Downtown), San Francisco, Silicon Valley, and Washington DC. There is only one opening.
The Assistant General Counsel is a member of Sheppard’s Office of the General Counsel. This role works under the direction of the Senior Assistant General Counsel.
The primary focus of the Assistant General Counsel is to review, analyze and resolve conflicts of interest and support the intake function, including drafting waivers and implementing outside counsel guidelines. More broadly, the Assistant General Counsel supports the OGC in advising the firm’s attorneys on the rules of professional responsibility, ethics, risk management and other legal issues associated with the business and operations of the firm. The successful candidate will be meticulous, intellectually curious, have good knowledge of conflict rules, effective people skills and thrive in a fast-paced environment.
Essential Functions
• Demonstrate mastery of the rules of professional conduct and related legal authorities related to conflicts of interest and disqualification.
• Perform analysis of conflict results and find creative approaches to meet the Firm’s business needs while upholding the legal requirements of the ethics rules.
• Work effectively with analysts, technology, staff and attorneys to provide excellent and timely service.
Required Qualifications
• 3+ years of legal ethics or law firm and conflicts analysis experience required. Be meticulous, intellectually curious, have good knowledge of conflict rules, effective people skills and thrive in a fast-paced environment.
Education
Required: Juris Doctor
Computer/Software Knowledge
Required: Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite applications including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
Work Environment
• Working indoors with limited exposure to hazards (only those that customarily come up in working in a high-rise or office building).
• Indoor office work environment.
• You will be based in one of our local Sheppard Mullin offices but will be allowed to work from home.
• You are required to come into the office on an as-needed basis.
• After hours and weekend work will be required on occasion as the workload requires.
Travel Requirements
Possibly up to 10%.
California: The salary range for this position is $175,000 to $230,000 per year.
District of Columbia: The pay range for this position is: $175,000 - $230,000 per year. Medical, vision, and dental coverage is available, including coverage for dependents and domestic partners. Please note that the foregoing compensation and benefit information is a good-faith assessment associated with this position as of the time of this posting and is provided pursuant to the District of Columbia Wage Transparency Omnibus Amendment Act of 2023.
Illinois: The salary range for this position is: $175,000 - $230,000 per year. This position is eligible for bonuses. This position is also eligible for medical, vision, and dental insurance. Please note that the foregoing compensation and benefit information is a good-faith assessment associated with this position only and is provided pursuant to Illinois Equal Pay Act.
New York: The pay range for this position is: $175,000 - $230,00 per year. Please note that the foregoing compensation information is a good-faith assessment associated with this position only and is provided pursuant to the New York City Salary Transparency Law.
