About Our Opportunity
As the Bridge Tender, you are responsible for the safe operation and maintenance of the single leaf bascule bridge at Lennox Passage. You will operate the bridge to allow for the safe passage of marine traffic while controlling highway traffic by means of warning lights, traffic lights, and remote control barricades.
Primary Accountabilities

As the Bridge Tender, you control the raising and lowering of the bridge by following a preset sequence of activities. You will communicate regularly with marine traffic and Coast Guards by means of a VHF radio, the operator of the railway swing bridge to coordinate bridge openings, and the public regarding bridge operation. You are responsible for general maintenance of the facility which includes housekeeping and cleaning of the control room and other levels of the east and west piers; maintaining lighting systems; receiving of potable water; maintaining sidewalks, walkways, stairways, and catwalks; and painting and/or touch-up painting which may include structural and mechanical components. You are also responsible for the daily maintenance of mechanical systems, monitoring of electrical systems, and record keeping.
Qualifications and Experience

High School and two (2) years of experience; or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience. Good verbal communications skills are required when contacting vessels. Good written communication skills are also necessary for the clear and accurate completion of log books.


A knowledge of hydraulic systems along with a mechanical aptitude would be considered assets. The following are also considered assets: Transportation of Dangerous Goods Certificate, Traffic Control Person Certificate, Fall Arrest training, First Aid Certification and CPR, WHIMS, and Knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act.


You must have ability to work with a minimum of supervision, have good hand-eye coordination, and be able to judge distance between vessels and the bridge for timing purposes.


You will be assessed on the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, interview, and reference checks.

Equivalency

An equivalent combination of training, education and experience will be considered. Equivalencies may include, but are not limited to:
At least 3 years of related experience.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in various weather conditions which at times may be hazardous to vessels, vehicles and pedestrians. There is exposure to noise, vibration, and occasionally to smoke and gas/ diesel/ oil fumes.

Additional Information

There are two (2) opportunities based in Martinique (Zone 5).


This opportunity is for a spare position: this position has no guarantee of hours – successful candidates will be called on a when and as required basis and will be only paid for the hours that they work.


During June, incumbents are scheduled to work for 8 hour shifts. During July and August, incumbents are scheduled for 12 hour shifts. Due to the operational requirements of seasonal marine traffic, scheduled hours and workdays may vary.


Upon appointment, candidates will be required to obtain their VHF radio license.
