Job overview
Merchant Taylors’ School, which was founded in 1561, is a leading independent day school that offers an outstanding all-round education to over 1,300 boys aged 3 to 18 years. Set in 280 acres of stunning grounds in Northwood, Hertfordshire, 30 minutes by rail from Central London, the facilities are outstanding. The School enjoys a strong reputation, a full pupil roll and robust finances, positioning it well for the future. With a turnover of over £30m, Merchant Taylors’ is a substantial and thriving organisation.
The Head Master and Governors are seeking to appoint an ambitious, highly motivated and collegiate individual to the post of Bursar. A successor to the Head Master, Simon Everson, who retires in August 2026 after 13 years of distinguished leadership, has recently been appointed and this is an exciting opportunity for a financially astute and commercially driven individual to join a high-performing school at a time of positive change and strategic ambition.
Reporting to the Head Master, and accountable to the Governing Body, the Bursar will be responsible for the effective leadership and management of the School’s finance, estates, operations, HR, compliance, and commercial activities. They will lead a large and diverse team of skilled and dedicated support staff to ensure excellence in delivery and operational and financial resilience. As a critical member of the Executive, they will play a vital role in shaping and executing the next phase of the School’s strategic development.
Candidates will bring a proven track record of executive leadership within complex organisations, with a blend of strategic insight, financial acumen, and operational delivery. An accounting qualification is not required, but the ability to lead with confidence across all commercial and support areas is crucial. Outstanding communication skills, resilience, emotional intelligence, and a collaborative, enabling leadership style are key requirements, as is the ability to lead large capital projects and drive innovation.
Prior experience in the education sector is not a prerequisite, and applications are encouraged from candidates with commercial, charitable, private-sector and public-sector backgrounds. The successful candidate must, however, demonstrate empathy with independent education and a commitment to Merchant Taylors’ ethos and values.
A highly attractive remuneration package, including accommodation and fee remission, will be available for the successful candidate.
