Café Manager
Baobab Café – Newtown, Wellington
Full Time (30 hours) | Tuesday to Saturday
$31–$34 per hour
At Baobab, we believe a café is more than just a place for a caffeine fix. Following the spirit of our namesake "Tree of Life," we strive to be a space where the Newtown community feels sheltered, known, and nourished. We’re looking for an experienced Café Managerto walk alongside us in leading our team and caring for the vibrant culture we’ve built over the years.
This is a hands-on leadership rolefor someone who loves the hum of a busy floor, values people, and takes pride in the operational flow of a high-volume café. This is a service-heavy role—not an office job—focused on being present with the team and our customers.
The Role
You’ll work to support the daily rhythm of the café—leading on the floor, guiding the team, and ensuring service feels smooth and welcoming even when the garden is full. You’ll help:
Lead and supportour team during active service hours.
Maintain high standardsin coffee, food, and the overall guest experience.
Keep systems organisedand flowing well across our indoor and outdoor spaces.
Contribute to a healthy, positive team culturethat reflects Newtown’s soul.
Support the operational and financial wellbeingof this local institution.
This role requires confidence across both front and back of house, and a willingness to step in wherever the rhythm requires.
What We’re Looking For
We’re seeking someone who brings both experience and a steady hand. You’ll ideally have:
2+ years’ experiencein required
Previous leadership or management experiencewith a proven track record.
The ability to stay calm and clearunder the pressure of a Saturday rush.
Confidence leading a teamwith a balance of kindness and firmness.
Most importantly, we’re looking for a leader who communicates clearly, leads by example, and understands that consistent standardsare what allow a creative culture to thrive.
