DESCRIPTION OF WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING

This is a Long-Term Temporary journey-level mechanic position that independently performs both routine and complex maintenance and repairs. This position requires advanced technical knowledge and skills to perform corrective and preventative maintenance on all Capital Transit vehicles and equipment. Types of Transit equipment include diesel and electric buses, paratransit vans, service support vehicles, and snow removal equipment. Particular attention will be given to a systematic and timely approach to performing quality repairs and maintenance. The Mechanic will work closely with the Supervisor to assist in system analysis and policy implementation.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR

We are seeking candidates with previous experience with diesel and internal combustion engine repair, ability to read electrical wiring diagrams, mechanical repair schematics and has the ability to work well independently and as part of a team to stay on task to meet constantly changing deadlines and priorities.

WORKING HOURS AND LOCATION

This position typically works 4 consecutive days, 10-hour shifts. The 4 consecutive days will be between Monday and Saturday, 6:30am – 5:00pm at the Capital Transit Bus Barn Maintenance Facility in the Valley and is on rotation for standby during Capital Transit operational hours. The actual shift may vary.

Typical Responsibilities:

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Performs preventative maintenance, repair, and overhaul of apparatus and equipment including the diagnosis, inspection, and replacement of automotive, mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic parts and components.
• Removes, cleans, examines and replaces mechanical, electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic parts, components and sub-assemblies.
• Performs the repair and maintenance on all Transit vehicles and equipment, i.e:

Rebuild/repair/replace hydraulic lines – pumps, motors, valves, cylinders, air lines – compressors, alternators, generators, switches, starters, regulators, body work, frames, tires, brake systems, glass and attachments, vehicle HVAC systems and restraints.
• Operates shop equipment in the repair and manufacture of needed parts, such as but not limited to drill presses, lathes, grinders, vehicle lifts, cylinder hones, etc. Must operate gas, wire, arc welders, oxy acetylene torches, etc.
• Troubleshoots, diagnoses, and repairs electronic and electrical systems including vehicle multiplexing systems, electronically controlled engines, transmission, and emissions systems.
• Uses power and hand tools when needed in association with performance of all duties, to include maintenance and repair of Capital Transit assets.
• Diagnose and repair steering components such as tie rod ends, king pins, drag links, pitman arms, gear boxes, ball joints, etc.
• Diagnose and repair suspension components such as air springs, springs and hangers, radius rods and bushings, leveling valves and kneeling systems, hangar brackets bushings and pins, etc.
• Diagnose and repair to brake components such as ABS systems and sensors, drum brakes, disc brakes, air brakes, hydraulic brakes, etc.
• Diagnose and repair to emissions systems on diesel and gasoline engines (i.e. particulate filters, DEF controlled systems, EGR systems, catalytic converters, etc.)
• Diagnose repair and snow removal equipment including plows, sanders, snow blowers, etc.
• Applies general knowledge of carburation, electrical generation and distribution; pumps, actuators, suspension components, transmissions, components and sub-assemblies, differentials and mechanical components.
• Fabricates items from sheet metal and other materials.
• Aligns wheels, adjusts brakes and performs other mechanical or electrical adjustments.
• Utilizes computer diagnostic software to determine and perform repairs, firmware updates, and maintenance required.
• Performs road tests and inspects vehicles to ensure compliance with D.O.T. and F.T.A. safety standards and effectiveness of repairs.
• Troubleshoots, maintains, and repairs stand-by generators.

Minimum Qualifications:

Experience: Three (3) years of experience in automotive, construction/heavy equipment, truck, or transit bus repair and maintenance as appropriate to specific position.

Education: Post-secondary education or technical training in automotive work may be substituted for the required experience on the basis of 125 clock hours of instruction for one month of experience up to a maximum of twenty-four months.

Other: Must provide and maintain own set of hand tools.
• *Minimum qualifications to apply for employment into a Long-Term Temporary Capital Transit Mechanic II position, requires the incumbent to obtain a valid Class “B” Alaska Commercial Driver’s License valid for vehicles equipped with airbrakes within + months of appointment.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

The position is a safety-sensitive position and is subject to United States Department of Transportation (USDOT)- Federal Transit Administration (FTA) drug and ******* testing. Additionally, applicants of safety-sensitive positions are required (even if ultimately not hired) to provide the City and Borough of Juneau with signed written releases requesting USDOT drug and ******* records from all previous, USDOT-covered employers that the applicant has worked for within the last two years. Failure to do so will result in the employment offer being rescinded.

The City and Borough of Juneau is also required to ask all applicants (even if ultimately not hired) if they have tested positive or refused to test on pre-employment test for any USDOT covered employer within the last two years.

Appointments will be made conditionally pending successful completion of all portions of the selections process, a medical evaluation* and receipt of verified negative results of pre-employment testing for controlled substances. Employees are then subject to random, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, return-to-duty- and follow-up drug and ******* as mandated by the Federal Transit Administration and CBJ policy.
