As an Engineering Manager , you’ll lead and coach a team of engineers to build scalable, customer first solutions—balancing hands-on technical leadership with people development so your team can do their best work.

Customer Digital & AI (CDAI) domain is responsible for all customer facing digital channels and journeys, including NetBank and CommBank App with a strong focus on digital money management, onboarding, payments, rewards, and personalised communications.

Retail Digital plays a foundational role in how Australians interact with the bank, supporting experiences used at massive scale every day, while we continue to modernise platforms and uplift reliability, security, and engineering excellence.

You’ll work within Retail Digital as a hands-on Engineering Manager , leading a squad of engineers while remaining close to the code and technical decisions. You’ll balance people leadership with active technical contribution , partnering with Product and Design in a trio model to deliver secure, reliable customer experiences. You’ll set direction, unblock teams, and uplift engineering standards across delivery, reliability, and security.

What you’ll do

Lead and coach a team of engineers to deliver high quality software products and platforms.
Partner with Product and Design in a trio leadership model to shape priorities and delivery.
Ensure reliability, observability, and security are built into solutions from day one.
Drive modern engineering practices across the SDLC— CI/CD, cloud native development, testing automation, deployment safety, and operational readiness .
Foster a culture of innovation, curiosity, and continuous improvement —lifting the bar on engineering craft.
Balance delivery outcomes with sustainable engineering: manage trade‑offs across speed, quality, and risk , and guide pragmatic modernisation.
What we’re looking for

We’re interested in hearing from people who have:

Proven experience leading engineering teams delivering customer facing platforms in complex environments.
A strong technical foundation in modern software engineering (cloud, APIs, DevOps) and the ability to lead with credibility.
Demonstrated ability to coach and mentor engineers , supporting growth and performance.
Experience embedding modern engineering practices—CI/CD, automation, observability, reliability, and secure engineering, into day to day delivery.
Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to align diverse partners around outcomes.
Exposure to AI enabled coding, intelligent orchestration, or agent based architectures is highly regarded.

Skills & technologies

We use a broad range of tools, languages, and frameworks. You don’t need to know them all, but experience with some of the following will set you up for success. Ideally at least one of frontend and backend technologies:

Backend & Full Stack: .NET Core / C#, Java, Node.js
Frontend (desirable): React, TypeScript, Next.js, Android, iOS
Data: SQL and NoSQL databases
DevOps & CI/CD: GitHub Actions, TeamCity, Octopus
Infrastructure as Code: Terraform, Pulumi, CloudFormation, SST
Quality & Reliability: automated testing, monitoring, operational readiness
Security: encryption, identity, authentication, secure design principles
