Job Description
Surge College Preparatory is a nonprofit charter school initiative currently in development in Baltimore City. Our model is designed as a college-readiness pipeline beginning in early childhood (3K–5), with a long-term vision for middle school expansion. Surge is grounded in academic excellence, culturally responsive education, social-emotional learning, and strong community partnerships.
As we prepare for charter authorization, we are assembling a mission-aligned founding board to guide governance, academic vision, and long-term school success.
Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced education professional to serve as a Founding Board Member with a focus on Education and Curriculum. This individual will play a key governance role in shaping the academic framework, instructional philosophy, and long-term educational trajectory of Surge College Preparatory.
This is a non-paid, volunteer board position with significant impact during the charter application and planning phase.
Key Responsibilities
Provide strategic guidance on curriculum development, instructional models, and academic standards
Support the articulation of the school’s educational vision for charter application materials
Advise on grade-level progression, literacy and numeracy frameworks, and student outcomes
Collaborate with fellow board members on governance, compliance, and long-term planning
Participate in board meetings, committees, and planning sessions as needed
Serve as an ambassador for the school’s mission within professional and community networks
Ideal Candidate Profile
Background in education, curriculum design, instructional leadership, or school administration
Experience with K–5, early childhood, or charter school environments strongly preferred
Familiarity with college-readiness frameworks, standards-based instruction, or SEL integration
Strong strategic thinking and collaborative skills
Commitment to educational equity and community-centered schooling
Willingness to serve in a governance capacity rather than day-to-day operations
Time Commitment
This role requires participation in scheduled board meetings and limited committee work, particularly during the charter application phase. Time commitment is structured and respectful of professional obligations.
Why Serve
Serving on the founding board of Surge College Preparatory offers a unique opportunity to help shape a new public charter school from the ground up and to directly influence educational access and outcomes for Baltimore City students.
How to Express Interest
Interested candidates are invited to submit a brief statement of interest and résumé outlining their educational background and experience. Selected individuals will be invited to an informational conversation with the founding team.
