Position Summary

The City of Chestermere is seeking an experienced Community Peace Officer I (CPO1) to join our team. This role plays a vital part in supporting the City's community safety initiatives. The CPO1 provides operational expertise in bylaw enforcement, traffic safety, and community engagement, contributing to enhanced public safety and the effective enforcement of municipal and provincial regulations.


Shift Schedule:

4-on / 4-off rotation (2080-hour averaging agreement). Shifts include days, afternoons, evenings, and holidays.


Key Accountabilities


Community Peace Officer Program:

Conducts community patrols and maintains safety in public spaces, including dog parks, pathways, and beach areas.
Manages traffic and pedestrian control to ensure public safety and orderly movement.

Bylaw Enforcement:

Enforces applicable provincial statutes and municipal bylaws, including the Traffic Control Bylaw, Unsightly Premises Bylaw, Community Standards Bylaw, Animal Control Bylaw, Anti-Bullying Bylaw, and Snow Removal Bylaw.

Public Engagement:

Responds to public complaints, inquiries, and requests, providing conflict resolution and mediation services.
Delivers prevention and education programs to schools and community groups.

Traffic Safety:

Prioritizes pedestrian and school zone safety.
Conducts targeted traffic patrols based on public complaints.
Issues provincial tickets under the Traffic Safety Act.

Educational Programs:

Works closely with schools as a Resource Officer, providing education and enforcement related to the Chestermere Anti-Bullying Bylaw.

Subject Matter Expertise:

Represents the Community Peace Officer team as a subject matter expert.
Prepares prosecution files for court and gathers required documentation for testimony.

Investigations:

Leads thorough provincial and municipal investigations, ensuring compliance with reporting requirements.

Interagency Collaboration:

Works cooperatively with Chestermere Fire Services, RCMP members, Alberta Sheriffs, and other agencies.

Confidentiality:

Handles sensitive and confidential information responsibly.

Departmental Values:

Participates in safety initiatives, inspections, and incident reporting.

Emergency Response:

Serves as a member of the Chestermere Emergency Response Team.

Required Education and Experience

Grade 12 Diploma (or GED).
Degree or Diploma in Law Enforcement or a related field is an asset.
Minimum of 3 years of progressively responsible experience in an enforcement-focused role is a must.

Community Peace Officer I Certification or equivalency is mandatory. Accredited bridge training in Law, and Traffic stop tactics will be considered.
Ability to obtain an RCMP Reliability Security Clearance.
Clear Criminal Record Check and Child Intervention Check.
Valid Class 5 Alberta Driver’s License with a satisfactory Drivers Abstract dating 3 years minimum.
Standard First Aid, CPR-C, and AED certifications.
Current Baton and OC Spray certifications.
Valid PARE/COPAT/POPAT/APREP (completed within 6 months)
EVOC Certification.

Shift work includes evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Frequent community travel in varied weather.
Potential exposure to aggressive individuals and high-stress situations.

Position Type: Full Time

Location: City Hall

Compensation: Pay Grade will be determined by position placement.

Pay: $43.36/hr. (you'll find the detailed information in Appendix A of the draft collective agreement)

Days of Work: 4-on / 4-off rotation
