Auckland Council’s Building Consents department has an opportunity for a Competency Assessor within our Capability Team, to coach, mentor, and train our technical staff so they can deliver consistent, high‑quality building control services across Tāmaki Makaurau.

As part of the Capability team, you’ll help strengthen the technical development of our people, support BCA accreditation, and uphold the standards of building consent and Certification processes for both internal teams and external stakeholders. Working closely with the Team Leader Assessment, you’ll support the implementation of the National Competency Assessment System (NCAS), assess technical competence, and identify training needs that help staff grow and succeed.

This is a meaningful opportunity to influence capability across the region, contribute to continuous improvement, and help shape a culture of learning, collaboration, and excellence.

Day-to-day you could expect to work on:

Evaluating staff against the National Competency Assessment System (NCAS).
Carrying out technical audits, competency assessments, and process or practice reviews.
Identifying training needs through audit findings, assessment evidence, and staff feedback.
Designing and delivering training modules, classroom sessions, group facilitation, and e‑learning content.
Supporting consistent Code Compliance certification and progress toward Regulation 18 qualifications.
Assisting with the Building Consents Graduate/Intern Programme.
Collaborating with specialists to refine processes, Codes of Practice, documentation, and accreditation requirements (Regulation 10, Regulation 11, IANZ).
Delivering training across the region for internal teams and external stakeholders, including opportunities to travel to other areas for training delivery.

Your strong communication and negotiation skills will enable you to engage effectively with external BCAs, senior leaders, managers, and a wide range of stakeholders.

You’ll be process‑driven and able to make sound, critical decisions, applying judgement that aligns with best industry practice. Your understanding of accreditation requirements, compliance standards, and quality assurance principles will help drive consistency and continuous improvement across the BCA.
