The Contractor Staff Accountant is assisting with a fiscal year end project.

JOB SUMMARY:

The Staff Accountant III leads complex accounting functions, supports high-level financial analysis, and acts as a resource for junior staff. This role partners with the Controller and VP of Finance to ensure financial accuracy, compliance, and timely reporting. The Staff Accountant III plays a key role in special projects, process improvement initiatives, and may oversee specific financial programs or grants.

This position supports a nonprofit agency dedicated to serving children, adolescents, and young adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).

WORK SCHEDULE:

Adelbrook is a 24/7 operating Agency. Schedules are flexible, may include early mornings, evenings, overnights, weekdays, weekends, holidays to meet operational needs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Prepare and review complex journal entries and reconciliations.
Lead month-end and year-end closing processes.
Assist with grant budgeting, fund tracking, and compliance reporting.
Analyze and present financial data to internal stakeholders.
Support external audits, cost reports, and compliance reviews.
Serve as a resource for Staff Accountants I and II; provide informal coaching.
Collaborate with departments on budgeting and spending oversight.
Lead or participate in special projects initiated by the VP of Finance (e.g., system upgrades, process audits, financial modeling).
Perform other related duties as assigned by leadership.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:

SKILLS:

Advanced accounting and financial analysis – ability to complete complex reconciliations, support financial forecasting, and perform in-depth variance analyses.
Technical proficiency – strong command of Excel (advanced formulas, pivot tables, data validation), accounting systems, and reporting tools; comfortable navigating and adapting to new financial technologies.
Project management – skilled in managing multiple accounting projects or special assignments for leadership, including cross-functional financial initiatives.
Problem-solving and decision-making – able to identify root causes of discrepancies and implement corrective actions with confidence and autonomy.
Professional communication – clear and concise in reporting financial data to stakeholders, preparing financial summaries, and presenting findings.
KNOWLEDGE:

Full-cycle accounting – deep understanding of all phases from journal entries and reconciliations to trial balances and financial statements.
Nonprofit and grant accounting – high-level knowledge of fund accounting, restricted/unrestricted revenue, cost allocations, and grant compliance/reporting.
Internal controls and risk management – familiarity with designing, evaluating, and reinforcing strong internal control frameworks.
Audit and compliance – thorough knowledge of audit preparation, documentation standards, and responding to internal/external audit requests.
Regulatory standards and policies – strong understanding of GAAP, IRS nonprofit requirements, and funder regulations.
HIPAA and Confidentiality Standards: Awareness of patient/client privacy rights and proper handling of sensitive financial and health-related information.
ABILITIES:

Lead accounting initiatives – take ownership of recurring financial processes and special assignments from the Controller or VP of Finance.
Mentor and support team members – provide technical guidance to Staff Accountants I and II; support knowledge-sharing across the department.
Analyze and improve processes – identify inefficiencies in workflows, propose solutions, and assist in implementing automation or process improvements.
Communicate financial insights – translate complex financial information into understandable formats for non-finance stakeholders and leadership.
Maintain confidentiality and integrity – uphold the highest standards of ethics and discretion in all financial dealings.
Align financial practices with mission – ensure accounting processes support the strategic goals of the organization and its service to individuals with autism and IDD
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required; CPA or Master’s preferred.
5+ years of accounting experience with increasing responsibility; nonprofit experience strongly preferred.
Strong knowledge of GAAP and fund accounting principles.
Proven ability to manage complex financial data and deliver clear analysis.
Experience with accounting systems and Excel at an advanced level.
Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
Proficiency in Excel and accounting software (e.g., MIP, Microx).
Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
Strong attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

This position operates in a professional office environment.
May require occasional travel to program locations for finance-related support.
Occasional work options may be available based on agency policy.
