Job Description
We are seeking a highly analytical Cost Accounting Manager to lead the cost accounting function for the growing $400M+ Warfighter Systems division. This role is responsible for overseeing cost analysis, inventory valuation, margin analysis, and supporting operational and financial decision making. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in cost accounting within a manufacturing environment and will work closing with the Operations, Finance, and Site Leadership teams. This role will initially report directly to the Warfighter Systems Controller in Roanoke, VA, while the Assistant Controller is the Finance Lead for the ongoing A&D ERP project underway.

Key job responsibilities include:
Manage and improve standard costing processes, including BOMS and standard rates. Support cost analysis as required for internal bid review process and key proposal efforts.
Analyze manufacturing costs and prepare regular reports comparing standard costs to actual production costs. Conduct variance analysis (Materials, Labor, Overhead, Inventory).
Prepare and review timely financial reports for Finance, Operations, and Leadership teams. Partner with Operations/Supply Chain to identify cost reduction and efficiency opportunities.
Lead local Finance Closing (month-end, quarterly, year-end) processes. Prepare and review journal entries as required. Support closing documentation and approvals. Own related account reconciliation processes. Utilize BlackLine system for closing and reconciliation tracking.
Own complex annual Standard Cost roll and quarterly Physical Inventory processes as Finance lead. Work cross-functionally with IT and Operations teams to ensure success.
Support Project Finance Estimate at Completion (EACs) responsibilities for Army program. Ensure accurate and timely program budgets and cost controls to maximize profitability.
Develop, implement, and maintain cost accounting systems, processes, and controls. Ensure compliance with GAAP and internal financial policies. Utilize AuditBoard to maintain SOX controls and procedures. Support internal and external E&Y audit testing and requests as required.
Supervise, mentor, and train direct cost accounting staff. Lead cost accounting team goal setting and initiatives. Provide performance evaluations and professional development for team.
Partner with IT team to support key Accounting processes in legacy ERP system while new A&D Infor ERP system is being implemented at the Roanoke site.
Support Cash management. Assist with new Working Capital reporting and improvement initiatives. Lead Inventory forecasting process and tracking locally with Supply Chain team.
Assist with budgeting and forecasting activities for Cost of Goods Sold (COGS) and Manufacturing operations. Support Manufacturing Overhead and Material Handling cost pool analysis with the Operations and FP&A teams. Drive key decision making across teams.
Help champion continuous improvement within the Finance/Accounting team. Identify and implement tools and training as needed. Take on special Finance projects as assigned.
Be a business partner to Warfighter Systems Site Leadership Team. Collaborate with cross-functional teams, such as Operations, Purchasing, Supply Chain, and Human Resources.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Finance or Accounting. CPA/CMA is a plus but not required.
Minimum of 5+ years of relevant Finance/Accounting work experience. Preferably direct experience working in an Operations Finance or Cost Accounting role with standard costing.
Previous leadership experience as manager with direct reports preferred.
Experience working in a project-oriented manufacturing/engineering environment preferred.
Advanced expertise analyzing financial information. Must possess high degree of accuracy and strong attention to detail but also able to look at the “big picture.”
Ability to design Finance processes and metrics within the functional area.
Possess a proven solid work ethic and able to act and operate independently to accomplish objectives and meet deadlines. Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and work in fast-paced environment.
Highly effective communication skills (verbal and written). Able to communicate financial and accounting terms to business unit staff clearly and concisely.
Overall mindset of continuous improvement. Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to proactively identify and implement process improvements.
Advanced expertise with MS Excel including complex formulas and pivot tables.
Defense contracting experience and working knowledge of Government cost principles – Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR), Defense Federal Acquisition Supplement (DFARS), Cost Accounting Standards (CAS) is a plus but not required.
