Description

The Deputy County Attorney is a legal professional who represents a county government in legal matters, typically working under the County Attorney. Their primary responsibilities include prosecuting criminal cases, providing legal advice to government agencies, and representing the county in civil matters.

Responsibilities

Review police reports and determine charges.
Prosecute misdemeanor cases in court.
Prosecute Juvenile cases involving children who are neglected, dependent, delinquent or in need of special supervision.
Present evidence, question witnesses, and make legal arguments.
Negotiate plea agreements.
Provide legal counsel to county departments and officials.
Handle litigation involving the county (e.g., lawsuits, employment disputes).
Draft and review contracts, ordinances, and policies.
Interpret and apply state and federal laws.
Research legal precedents for cases.
Prepare legal opinions and briefs.
Attend county commission meetings as needed.
Work with law enforcement on investigations.
Provide public education on legal issues.
All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Juris Doctorate (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
Licensed to practice law in the state of Nebraska.
Previous experience in criminal prosecution, juvenile law, and child support preferred.
