The Role
The Director Tax is responsible to manage all aspects of Corporate Taxes for the Company including Canadian and United States income tax compliance, tax disputes, tax provision (quarterly and annual accounting and disclosure related to income taxes under IFRS), tax planning, and managing relationships between the corporate tax group and Business Units with respect to sales and use and other forms of taxation. The position is also responsible to support the Corporate Development group with respect to all corporate taxes, including structuring, acquisition / disposition related planning and economic modeling.


What You Will Do

As a Director Tax you will:

Align with the Gibson Way Values, and is responsible for developing and mentoring team members, and providing guidance and direction for the overall group, including:
Manage performance of individuals to achieve results.
Build a collaborative, innovative team to exceed customer expectations (internal and external).
Communicate the Company’s vision and strategy in relatable terms.
Create an environment of engagement for team members to produce high quality services. Manage and ensure various Canadian corporate income tax returns, partnership returns, and elections are accurately prepared and filed on time.
Manage and ensures various United States Federal and State corporate income tax and other returns are accurately prepared and filed on time.
Manage the SRED claims process and manages the requirements of the U.S. Financing structure.
Manage tax disputes with all taxation authorities (Canadian / U.S.).
Manage the quarterly and annual tax provision process including the related disclosure requirements for the financial statements under IFRS. This includes reviewing the calculations, reviewing the disclosure requirements, and providing technical expertise where necessary.
Identify opportunities to minimize tax and implements strategies to realize tax savings across the Company’s operations (including tax planning, recoveries, tax credits, grants, and incentives).
Perform complex technical corporate tax research and planning (Canadian, U.S., and International).
Monitor the tax jurisdictions applicable to the Gibson companies and advises on the impact of any new tax legislation.
Manage and is involved in the interaction with Business Units and apply research to their specific tax questions in the areas of income taxes, fuel taxes, and sales taxes.
Manage, support and communicate with the Corporate Development group with respect to tax structuring for growth and acquisition projects, dispositions, agreement review, and economic modeling.
Manage and participate in a variety of projects including information system development and corporate financing initiatives by providing tax support.
Manage the business change process with regards to tax as Gibson’s moves into new businesses and/or geographical areas (US).
Manage and provide assistance in the appropriate calculation of tax for budgeting and forecasting activities.
Manage and assist with research and implementation with respect to Canadian or joint US/Canadian tax planning assignments.
Participate in the creation and development of tax related and other initiatives within the Financial Services Business Plan.
Provide support and advice to executives as required.
Ensure annual objectives as set in the Financial Services Business Plan are achieved.
Manage the capital project tracking process to ensure asset schedules and reconciliations are prepared for the preparation of the tax returns.
Select, develop, and evaluate tax group personnel to ensure the efficient and effective operation of the tax function
Support the development and coaching of tax group members to learn and grow in areas such as developing company specific knowledge, developing the ability to analyze complex transactions to accurately reflect appropriate tax treatment and future income taxes, determining the effects of changing IFRS standards and recommend appropriate tax treatment of such transactions.
Review and analyze current corporate financial records and determine proper tax treatment for a wide variety of transactions.
Support the realization of the Company’s Sustainability objectives, including in the areas of carbon pricing and carbon taxation
Maintain strong relationships with government and industry stakeholders
Demonstrates a personal commitment and proactive approach to Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S) through participation in all applicable EH&S programs and ensures safe operation of the branch, team or unit and compliance with all Company EH&S policies and procedures.
May perform other duties as assigned.

What You Will Bring to the Role

University degree and Chartered Professional Accounting Designation.
Completion of CPA In-Depth tax course.
Minimum 10-15+ years of post- qualification related experience – Industry experience an asset
Previous managerial or supervisory experience is a requirement.
Strong general knowledge of the Canadian Income Tax Act and the Internal Revenue Code, as it pertains to the Company’s operations.
Strong tax and accounting system computer skills, i.e., Excel, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Dynamics 365, Tax Prep.
Broad and well-developed expertise in various taxes both in Canada and the United States.
Exceptional inter-personal and communication skills.
Self motivated and able to manage and prioritize multiple projects and processes.
Able to recommend and successfully implement changes to systems and procedures.
Team and company focused.
