Job Description

Project description

The Vanuatu National Disaster Management Office has requested the support of a Peace Corps Response Volunteer (PCRV) to serve as a Disaster Risk Management & Climate Change Adaptation Specialist. Vanuatu is one of the most vulnerable countries in the world to climate change and disaster risks and there have been many programs and projects undertaken by government and partner agencies to build disaster resilience at the national level. There is a need to build on existing capacities and link with community aspirations and initiatives to achieve the DRRM priorities at the community grassroots level.

The PCRV will work with the Provincial Disaster Officer (PDO) to help develop, update, and improve the existing plans, incorporate best practices, and make the plans more relevant to the realities of climate change. The PCRV will also assist the PDO with providing technical and institutional support on strengthening linkages for effective coordination from the National and Provincial levels to the Area Administrators.

Candidates selected for this position will be arriving in Vanuatu together as a group, so while the departure dates for the whole group could change, dates cannot be changed for individual candidates.

Required Skills
• Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Planning and Management, Information Technology, or any related field.
• Experience in Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM).
• 2 years of experience in DRRM & EWS program planning or capacity-building activities.
• Experience in using or conducting training on GIS Software for hazard mapping, and reporting systems.
• Excellent people skills and flexible attitude when it comes to dealing with the community.
• Experience working in development or other low-resource contexts
