DPS Officers perform a variety of law enforcement and public safety functions within the Department of Public Safety (DPS).
This recruitment will be used to establish an eligibility list for current and future DPS Officer positions for Las Vegas, Boulder City, Indian Springs, Jean, Henderson, Laughlin, Mesquite, Pahrump and Pioche.

Assignments vary widely and incumbents are assigned to various divisions within the department including the Nevada State Police, State Fire Marshal's Office, Investigations, Parole & Probation, and Capitol Police. All positions in this series are trained peace officers in accordance with requirements established by the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.). Allocation of positions to various levels within the series is based on the nature and complexity of the assignment; the depth of knowledge in specialized areas of law enforcement and public safety; supervisory responsibility; and level of independence DPS employees receive an excellent benefits package that includes health, dental and vision insurance, Public Employees Retirement Plan (PERS), three (3) weeks paid vacation, three (3) weeks sick leave, eleven (11) paid holidays, and are not subject to state, county, city or social security taxes. Retirees looking for second career with Nevada will no longer be subject to the reductions in current Social Security benefits. To Qualify
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Certification as a Category I Peace Officer from a Nevada P.O.S.T. approved law enforcement academy and one year of law enforcement experience as a Category I Peace Officer; OR one year of experience as a DPS Officer I in Nevada State service. Special Notes Applicant must meet current Peace Officer's Standards & Training (P.O.S.T.) requirements as established in the Nevada Revised Statutes and Nevada Administrative Code. Incumbent must pass the Peace Officer's Standards & Training (P.O.S.T.) fitness test and possess the physical and mental abilities to perform the essential functions of the position as a condition of continuing employment. Incumbent must meet firearms qualification/certification standards and proficiency requirements as established by agency policy. Some DPS Officer II positions are granted a salary adjustment of 5% for complex investigative responsibilities or the supervision of DPS Officer II's performing complex investigations that require additional experience and expertise. These positions will be identified at the time of recruitment and are assigned to the Investigations Division, State Fire Marshals Office, Major Accident Investigation Team, and the State's Fusion Centers. Specific duties assigned to DPS Officer II positions are described in the Benchmark Descriptions Special Requirements Working evenings, weekends, and/or holidays is required. A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant. Statewide travel is required. This position is subject to call-out or call-back. A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continued employment. Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances. Additional Position Criteria Have you ever been convicted of any crime involving moral turpitude? For purposes of this application, moral turpitude refers to any conduct that is believed to be contrary to the community standards of honesty, justice, or good moral values. Also, a conviction includes probation, community supervision, or deferred adjudication. Have you ever resigned in lieu of termination or been terminated from any civil service employment for substantiated misconduct involving dishonesty?
