The Role
The Centre for Defence Leadership and Ethics (CDLE) will increase and improve the availability of Social Mastery (SM) knowledge (comprising information, resources, and education and training (E&T)) for military and civilian Defence personnel. This position is new, so its duties will evolve.
The person in this position will:
Work in an integrated team of Australian Defence Force (ADF) military members and Australian Public Service (APS) civilian employees.
Work closely with the RAN, Army, RAAF, and other Defence Groups.
Continually explore, recommend and (as assigned) manage/coordinate “innovative” means of enhancing the format, access, and delivery of SM knowledge.
Include the determination and implementation of appropriate information technology systems and other tools for the online hosting of Defence SM knowledge.
“Think outside the box”, while recognising the need to work within the requirements of public sector good governance and Defence structures, policy, and security.
Help us to define what the word “innovative” means in the context of Defence SM knowledge.

The Australian Defence College's (ADC) Centre for Defence Leadership and Ethics (CDLE) leads in the professional military education of ‘Social Mastery’ for military and civilian personnel in the Australian Defence Organisation (Defence) - comprising the Australian Defence Force and the Department of Defence.
CDLE defines, delivers and assures the quality of Defence’s Social Mastery learning across the fields of command and leadership, military ethics, character, and cultural intelligence. CDLE’s role is grounded in robust research, real-world experience, academic expertise, and enterprise-wide engagement. We enable the practical application of Social Mastery learning across Defence, drawing on a joint, all-ranks perspective, reinforced through real life case studies, deep personal experience, and world-leading research.
We are a united team who values robust debate and critical analysis, underpinned by a deep respect for the achievements, experience, and expertise of our colleagues.
Our Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will be:
Experienced in exploring and recommending innovative, effective means of developing knowledge of human behaviour at the whole-of-organisation scale.
Experienced in leading and managing projects relating to knowledge innovation and access, and writing quality reports to senior executives.
Adept at collaborating across a large and complex organisation comprising many perspectives, and constructively resolving uncertainty or disagreement.
Comfortable working to achieve Defence’s mission and being informed of the sometimes confronting nature of Defence’s operations and activities.
Willing and able to work cooperatively in CDLE’s integrated ADF and APS workforce, and positively manage assigned ADF and APS staff.
Able to contribute to CDLE’s mission with enthusiasm, proactivity, and ingenuity.
Preferably, experienced working in, or closely with, the military.
