The Role
Join us as the Director of Research Data and Information at DSTG!
You will be responsible for the delivery of specialist tools, services and resources to support the needs of Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) researchers. Leading a team of geographically distributed Library and ICT professionals, you will grow and embed research data services; oversee selection, access and discovery of scholarly information resources and collaborate on the management and discovery of specialised, classified DSTG publications.
You’ll work across broader Defence on data initiatives, including implementation of the Defence Data Strategy and partner across DSTG to develop user-focused solutions to improve researcher access to tools and infrastructure.
As part of the DSTG Team, you will play an important role in uplifting treatment of data in both the broader information environment and in bespoke solutions for research.
Duties include:
Oversee innovation, development and delivery of DSTG research data and information tools and services.
Oversee innovation, development and delivery of research data and information literacy training.
Manage the Research Data and Information team, functions and budget.
Engage with Defence-wide Data initiatives and represent DSTG as required.
Lead sharing, where possible, of DSTG innovation and discovery in research data and information management in both academic/research and professional/technical outlets (e.g. peer reviewed conference papers or journal articles).
Engage and collaborate with peers in related Publicly Funded Research Agencies.
Contribute to the ongoing development and evolution of DSSC capabilities and culture.
About our Team
The Research Data and Information (RDI) team supports DSTG by managing research data and information as a strategic asset, enabling it to be discoverable, reproducible and reusable. Importantly, RDI aims to provide services aligned with Defence Innovation, Science and Technology research needs, working collaboratively with researchers and using technology to enable these services.
RDI delivers guidance and services in the following areas:
Research data management advice and planning support.
Research information services (literature searches, digital and limited print resource management, document delivery).
Scalable training offerings (online inductions and tailored training for researchers).
Research collaboration and benchmarking analytics (including bibliometric analyses).
A research partnering team – working directly with researchers.
Our Ideal Candidate
Our ideal candidate will have expert knowledge of the research information environment including deep understanding of the research lifecycle and Science and Technology scholarly communication; trends and issues in research data and information management solutions, technologies and methods; contemporary approaches to metadata, information description, tagging and discoverability; information and data literacy; and researcher capability uplift and engagement.
We are seeking a leader who has demonstrated capabilities in persuasive written and verbal communication, collaboration, boundary spanning and strategic thinking. Post graduate qualifications in library, information, and data management or computer science will be highly desirable.
