Job description: General Statement of Duties

This employee assists Electrical Maintenance Workers install, modify, test, repair, and troubleshoot electrical lines, circuits, systems, fixtures, controls, and equipment in order to maintain such services as traffic controls and electrical maintenance of city equipment in various departments; does site preparation work such as controlling traffic and helping set up equipment. Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications (KSAs)

Knowledge of:

Basic arithmetic functions to make measurements and to choose correct hardware.

Ohm's law and other related formulas to calculate resistance, current, voltage, and loads.

Safety precautions when working with electricity, around machinery, in traffic, at heights, in confined areas, and with tools.

Electrical trade language to follow work orders and understand instructions.

Hardware used when installing switches and wiring circuits to make connections and corrections.

Common symbols used on schematics, blueprints, and work drawings to read and interpret graphic descriptions of electrical circuits.

Basic series and parallel light circuits to install, modify, repair, and maintain circuits and component parts.

Grounding concepts related to basic electrical equipment and tools.

Skill to:

Install hardware safely to complete repairs, installations, and connections.

Use general construction hand tools such as drills, pliers, wrenches, and electrician's hand tools such as fish tape, crimpers, cable connectors, etc.

Use and maintain small power tools such as electric drills and hydraulic tools.

Wire lights and fixtures, etc., so that they function safely and properly.

Pull wire safely through conduit

Carry tools and equipment necessary to perform the work.

Ability to:

Read, interpret, and work from basic schematics.

Read, interpret, and apply directions in construction equipment manuals.

Read, interpret, make, and work from basic line and block drawings.

Learn basic first aid, defensive driving, etc.

Climb ladders, scaffolding, and water towers, and to work at great heights in a safe manner.

Descend into manholes, transformer vaults, etc., to work in confined places.

Read test instrument's gauges accurately and to observe malfunctioning equipment.

Understand verbal and written instructions.

Possess and demonstrate a mechanical/electrical aptitude.

Distinguish between basic colors and/or shades of colors to interpret color-coded wiring.

Work from type 1A ladders and aerial equipment which have a 300 lb. safety capacity.

Do precise work requiring manual and finger dexterity.

Examples of Work Performed:

Prepares the work site by controlling traffic and helping to set up equipment such as ladders, scaffolds, platforms, lift trucks, etc.

Installs and modifies such items as conduit, underground ducts, and circuits by measuring, cutting, threading, bending, splicing, and installing hardware.

Installs, replaces, troubleshoots, and repairs lighting fixtures of different types such as incandescent, fluorescent, mercury vapor, sodium vapor, and indicators by observing, testing, and adjusting.

Maintains basic electrical control systems and assists in maintaining more complicated control systems by inspecting, adjusting, cleaning, and repairing.

Maintains work records using paper forms, checklists, notepads, or various computer programs such as computerized maintenance management or work order software or other devices.

Assists in troubleshooting, repairing, and/or modification and replacement of damaged, malfunctioning, and faulty electrical lines, circuits, and systems.

Assists in the troubleshooting of damaged and defective wiring.

May replace damaged and defective wiring and tighten electrical connections.

May perform construction and maintenance related to electrical work.

May excavate holes 6'-10' deep, install anchor bolts in concrete for installation of poles, and may excavate trenches of various depths to install underground conduit, backfill, and to replace concrete walks, etc.

May draw sketches or block drawings to notify supervision of changes in circuits, wiring connections, and switches.

May work safely from platform lift trucks, type 1A ladders, and other aerial equipment which has a 300 lb. safety capacity.

May assist in electrical maintenance of commercial or industrial type electric motors.

May maintain and troubleshoot fractional hp to large-sized electric motors by testing, inspecting, and servicing them.

May assist in inspection, cleaning, testing, and servicing of switchgear and/or transformers and batteries.

May assist in troubleshooting, testing, and/or repairing of electrical pumps.

Required Education and Experience

TRANSCRIPTS/CERTIFICATIONS MUST BE ATTACHED IF QUALIFYING WITH EDUCATION OR APPLICATION WILL BE REJECTED

Each applicant must have one year of full-time, paid experience in basic electrical repair or maintenance work, or completed a full trade school program (high school level) in electrical or electronic repair or maintenance, or have 12 credit hours of electrical maintenance and repair courses through an accredited college level program.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Must have a valid Driver's License.

A valid Commercial Driver's License may be required for certain assignments.

Vision suitable for reading test instrument gauges accurately.

Ability to work in confined spaces.

Ability to climb ladders, scaffolding, etc., and work at great heights.

Strength to safely pull cable through conduit, lift and carry toolboxes, electric panels, and other heavy equipment.

Color vision sufficient to distinguish between basic colors and shades of colors to analyze color-coded wiring systems.

Sufficient finger dexterity to handle small fittings and do precise work inside boxes and equipment.

When assigned, must be willing to work on irregular and/or rotating, split, or night shifts and to respond to emergency calls when necessary.

Must be willing and able to drive assigned vehicles when necessary and to operate mechanical equipment when necessary.

MILITARY EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE EVALUATION

Military education and experience may be substituted for college level course work at the lower and upper division baccalaureate and graduate levels and apprenticeship training at the vocational certificate level on a case by case basis based on the American Council on Education (ACE) Military Guide recommendations. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

The purpose is to detect security risks and prevent security threats posed by potential employees.

U.S. Citizenship: All positions with the City of Cincinnati require that each applicant be a citizen of the United States or have a valid permanent resident card at the time of appointment (date of hire).

Expected salary: $4+811.8 - 51580.87 per year
