Position: Environmental Educator

Type: age 30 & under / summer

Organization: North Coast Ecology Centre Society

Location: Prince Rupert, BC

The North Coast Ecology Centre Society is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Priority will be given to those candidates who have the necessary qualifications and self-identify as belonging to underrepresented groups.

The North Coast Ecology Centre Society

The North Coast Ecology Centre Society (NCECS), a newly registered charity organization, is working to create a permanent education centre in Prince Rupert, BC that highlights the region’s ecological richness, both terrestrial and marine. Our mission is to inspire a sense of awe, respect and stewardship for this area, its wildlife, people and traditions. The North Coast Ecology Centre Society operates in the traditional territory of the Coast Ts’msyen and Sm’algyax speaking peoples, and with their participation, guidance and approval, the NCECS’s goal is to incorporate and include local indigenous knowledge, stories, and language. Using a combination of engaging programs and exhibits, including live displays of fish and marine invertebrates (collected and released each season), the Centre will offer a new tourist destination, activate and revitalize Prince Rupert’s waterfront, and become a community resource for locals to connect with and learn about the environment around them.

While the Society plans, designs, and builds a new, permanent Centre, it is simultaneously creating and executing exciting community events and programs that help us fulfill our mission. For example, the NCECS held the first and second annual North Coast Whale Festival in 2018 and 2019; from 2021 to 2025 we have organized an online lecture series; in 2021 we hosted the first ever “pop-up” ecology centre; we were part of the organizing committee for the Earth Day events at the Seal Cove Salt Marsh from 2022 to 2024; and have completed two seasons of our Phase 1 North Coast Ecology Centre hosted in our shipping container-based facility in 2023 and 2024.

Role Overview

In 2025, the NCECS will undertake a summer season of programming in and around Prince Rupert to engage the public and youth in learning about local ecology. The team of educators are responsible to undertake and oversee many of the day-to-day operations at the North Coast Ecology Centre in support of the NCECS mission and goals.

Position responsibilities will include:
• Assisting with opening, running, and closing of the North Coast Ecology Centre with support from the NCECS Coordinator along with other staff and volunteers;
• Developing and delivering interpretive programs;
• Designing displays and mini-exhibits for the Centre;
• Animal collection and exemplary care of marine invertebrates and intertidal species;
• Providing engaging educational interpretation to visitors at the Centre;
• Supporting and working with volunteers;
• Assisting with school and daycamp events;
• Undertaking community and visitor consultation through surveys and feedback forms;
• Developing comprehensive event plans;
• Assisting with communications and social media;
• Working with partner organizations and the board to execute the society’s mission; and
• other duties as required.
