Salary: £23,140 FTE (£13,884 pro rata) per annum

Hours: Part-time permanent post, 21 hours per week (0.6 FTE)

The Trust is looking for a part-time (0.6 FTE) Evidence Officer. Your primary role will be to provide robust evidence of the impact of the Trust’s conservation work by ensuring the correct collection, management and analysis of habitat and associated data.

You will provide scientific support to the conservation and science teams to ensure that habitat monitoring, and other data is collected and analysed appropriately to monitor the impact of our habitat management interventions. You will be experienced in ecological data collection, cleansing and statistical analysis using R and the production of appropriate graphical representations.

Job purpose: To provide robust evidence of the impact of the Trust’s conservation work by ensuring the correct collection, management and analysis of habitat and associated data. This role will also collate and provide internal and external evidence relevant to conservation decision making.

Main responsibilities

Habitat management:
• To lead on the evaluation of the Trust’s habitat management work
• Develop, implement and review efficient systems for collecting and submitting habitat data
• Ensure that the project teams are following relevant protocols and submitting data correctly
• Collate and analyse habitat data to evaluate the effectiveness of the Trust’s habitat work

Data collection and analysis:
• To assist with other Trust data collection and analysis
• To work with the Science Manager to explore further analysis of the BeeWalk & other datasets
• Work with the project teams, the Data Monitoring Officer and the GIS team to ensure all data is securely stored in accessible formats
• To work with the Science Manager and project teams to collect, analyse and report on project data for papers, funding reports, committee and Board reports etc
• To provide evidence for decision making
• To identify and collate all sources of available evidence to assist with decision making, e.g. new project development.

Person Specification

Essential:
• A relevant degree or equivalent experience to be able to demonstrate:
• Excellent understanding of the scientific method, especially the principles of robust data collection and statistical analyses
• Ability to use R for data carpentry, statistical analysis of a variety of datasets and produce appropriate graphical representations
• Ability to search, access, understand and analyse scientific literature
• Ability to communicate complex data and analyses in a clear and understandable way for a variety of audiences
• A team player with the ability to collaborate effectively and a willingness to support other teams when needed
• Self-motivated, able to organise and prioritise your own tasks and if appropriate understand the challenges of working from home and have strategies to overcome them
• Able to apply your own initiative to solve problems and suggest improvements

Desirable:
• Ability to train others in software use
• Knowledge of bumblebee ecology
• Familiarity with and experience of using external open datasets and resources such as NBN and Conservation Evidence
• Experience of developing and implementing dataflows for example using a platform such as Coreo
• Experience of using QGIS for basic mapping tasks
• Ability to drive and access to a vehicle
