oin Aunt Leah’s Thresholds Program and support new and expectant mothers and their children in a safe, nurturing environment. As a Family Support Worker, you’ll provide comprehensive guidance, life skills coaching, and emotional support to help families navigate housing instability and challenges related to the risk of losing their children or regaining custody through the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD). This role focuses on supporting participants to develop essential parenting and life skills , including addressing substance use, and is not about providing direct personal or clinical care.

Job description:

Reporting to the Thresholds Program Coordinator, the Family Support Worker provides trauma-informed, person-centered support to parenting mothers and their children within Aunt Leah’s Thresholds Program. This role helps mothers experiencing housing instability, substance use, or other complex life challenges build parenting skills, life skills, and long-term stability for themselves and their families.

Thresholds is a three-stage transitional housing program offering safe communal housing, wraparound supports, and opportunities for personal growth. The program promotes independence, parenting confidence, and a nurturing environment where mothers and children can thrive.

Opportunities Available:

2 x Full-Time Regular Positions:

Shift Schedule: 7.5 Hour Day Shifts; 37.5 hrs/week; Monday to Friday; generally 9:00 am - 5:00 pm
Thresholds House is a Supportive Housing program for mothers in need; Staff works alone.
Location: New Westminster, BC
Reports To: Thresholds Program Coordinator (Supervisor)
Compensation: $25.40
Qualifications: Required education and experience includes:

Child and Youth Care Diploma, Social Services Diploma, or equivalent.
Minimum of 1-2 years’ experience in providing support to women and children; with an emphasis on mental health, addictions, homelessness, and/or social services; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience with general suitability.
Requirements:

Satisfactory Criminal Record Check (including vulnerable persons) and Local Police Information Check (including vulnerable persons)
Undergo & Maintain a MCFD Contracted Agency Caregiver Clearance
First Aid – Level C w/ CPR
Food Safe Certificate
Agrees to the Aunt Leah’s Code of Ethics
Follows Aunt Leah’s Practice Guidelines
Assets :

A valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License, and access to a vehicle; with $5,000,000 in business liability insurance, and clean driver’s abstract

Key Responsibilities

Build trusting relationships with participants using a trauma-informed, person-centered approach, supporting mothers in their parenting journey and helping children thrive.

Provide comprehensive support by guiding participants through personal care routines—such as infant care, self-care, hygiene, and nutrition—helping them learn and gain confidence to perform these tasks independently.
Support parenting and life skills development , including child development, attachment-based care, meal planning, financial literacy, and household management.
Assist mothers in accessing resources , including education, employment, mental health, substance use, and community supports to meet their goals.
Support mothers at risk of losing custody or actively working to regain custody through the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD).
Respond to and de-escalate crisis situations , maintaining safety and providing emotional support to participants and staff.
Foster a safe and respectful living environment by promoting adherence to house rules and encouraging positive community engagement.
Maintain accurate documentation , tracking participant progress and program outcomes in line with Aunt Leah’s standards.
Collaborate with internal teams and community partners , including social workers and health professionals, to provide holistic support.
Participate in program activities , such as meal preparation, workshops, recreational engagement, and household tasks, while working independently in a semi-supervised setting.
Encourage personal growth and independence , empowering participants to make informed decisions and build confidence in parenting and daily living.
On-Call

Participate in scheduled on-call rotation and provide after-hours support as required
Training is provided for on-call rotation
Physical Demands

Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and safely assist children as needed
Working Conditions:

Hours of work are generally 37.5 hours per week (7.5 hours a day); generally, 9:00 – 5:00 pm; with occasional evening and weekend hours as operationally needed
This position may require working occasional evenings and weekends and travel to various locations within Metro Vancouver.
This position is primarily based out of the Thresholds Programming residences, which are located across various sites in New Westminster, BC and Burnaby, BC.
Participate in on call as scheduled.
