Job Description
As the Forestry Accounting Specialist, you will be the team lead, subject matter expert and:
Responsible to receive, monitor and process financial data received from forestry companies. This information is used to verify payment compliance and perform year-end reconciliation of forestry company remittances of dues and fees on timber harvested during the year with the volume of forest products harvested.
Responsible for compliance monitoring of payment obligations for sample-scale companies.
Provincial Dues calculation and distribution - responsible to calculate and distribute the quarterly timber dues accurately and on time. Calculate as set out in the Forest Resources Management Regulation, the quarterly Saskatchewan Timber Dues rates based on quarterly commodity prices and Bank of Canada exchange rates.
Trust Funds: Responsible for the review, reconciling to bank statements, and compliance monitoring of deposits and expenditures.
Responsible for completing revenue reconciliations for sample scale companies.
Provide direct staff supervision, assign work, manage staff.
Understand the legislative framework for forestry financial obligations in Saskatchewan, including the Forest Resources Management Act and Regulations, Financial Administration Manual, standards, policy, forestry directives and related legislation and related policies.
The ideal candidate will have knowledge of:
Business accounting and auditing practices, principles and theories (e.g. accounts reconciliation, generation of billings, statistical analysis sampling for audits, financial information database management), computerized financial management programs in order to perform calculations, and analyze and interpret statistical data while conducting financial compliance monitoring.
Must have excellent written and oral communication skills for summarizing analysis, preparing correspondence, and preparing reports.
Must have excellent research and analytical skills for identifying and communicating financial non-compliances and for preparing forestry revenue accruals.
Must have an excellent understanding of word processing and spreadsheet applications for preparing correspondence and summarizing information.
Knowledge of financial management systems such as MIDAS or FMS.
Experience working in the natural resource industry is an asset.
Typically, the competencies required for this position can be achieved through the completion of a degree or 2-year diploma in accounting and five plus years of experience working within this industry and/or government in an accounting position.
