Our practice comprises of a number of teams who provide legal services to each of the business areas in our department. This structure promotes relationship building with our clients, diversity of work and a deeper understanding of the statutory, policy and business context in which our clients operate.
We are looking for lawyers with strong technical legal abilities, great interpersonal skills and a 'can-do' attitude. The team a successful candidate is placed with will be negotiated with that candidate having regard to their skills and preferences and operational requirements.
While we are interested in strong candidates with a range of skills and interests, we are in particular looking for lawyers to work in the following teams:
The Corporate and Information Law Team, responsible for handling requests and making decisions under the Freedom of Information Act 1+82, providing advice on privacy and data law and advising the corporate areas of the department on a range of legal matters, including government advertising campaigns and employment related legal issues; and
The Higher Education, Research and International Legal Team, responsible for providing legal services to the department's Higher Education, Research and International Group, including interpretation of portfolio legislation, administrative law, establishment and operation of grants programs, drafting of legislative instruments, and a significant program of legislative development.

As a Government Lawyer (APS6), your responsibilities will include:
Providing high quality legal advice to client areas in areas of law relevant to the work of the team, that identifies and differentiates between legal requirements and risks.
Building and maintaining relationships with various stakeholders, both internal and external to the department.
Working with clients to develop and implement programs, as well as advise on existing legislation, potential reforms and legislation development.
Applying statutory interpretation and administrative law skills in the development and administration of the department's programs.
Advising on potential legal claims and disputes and managing litigation matters, including opportunities to perform in-house advocacy in tribunal matters.
Supporting junior lawyers within the team and working collaboratively within a team.
As a Senior Government Lawyer (EL1), your responsibilities will include:
Providing high quality legal advice to client areas in areas of law relevant to the work of the team, that identifies and differentiates between legal requirements and risks.
Working with a significant degree of autonomy to manage complex legal matters, reporting to the Principal Government Lawyer.
Building and maintaining relationships with various stakeholders, both internal and external to the department.
Working with clients to develop and implement programs, as well as advise on existing legislation, potential reforms and legislation development.
Applying statutory interpretation and administrative law skills in the development and administration of the department's programs.
Advising on potential legal claims and disputes and managing litigation matters, including opportunities to perform in-house advocacy in tribunal matters.
Supervising, mentoring and managing junior staff, ensuring high quality work output and support professional development.
