About The Role
We are seeking a Government Relations Consultant for a Full Time Permanent placement based in ACT Barton.
Purpose Of The Role
This role will contribute to fight for social justice in Australia by:
Empowering people within The Salvation Army (TSA) to understand and ethically leverage the political processes in Australia.
Supporting advocacy and influencing decision-makers to advance social service delivery and social justice policy; and
Using the TSA’s expertise, experience and faith to develop sound policy positions to obtain outcomes.
Key Roles And Responsibilities
Government Relations Policy Development
Contribute to the national strategy for Government Relations that promotes the aims of The Salvation Army
Create and promote the path towards the effective development of State and Local Government Relations to further the performance of the TSA’s mission in Divisions, Areas and Corps
Working with State (Divisional) External Communications Managers to establish, track and measure the development of Government Relations in the Divisions
Conduct research into government relations policy theory and issues.
Provide expert advice in relation to government policy and advocacy and developments in specialist sectors including the social, political and economic developments affecting these sectors
Assist service delivery areas to operationalize national policy into practice.
Engagement with stakeholders and service delivery teams to ensure TSA communications with Government are informed by frontline service delivery experience
Monitor, daily, all APH emails and communications for relevant items to be brought to the attention of hood, Government Relations o Advise the HoD, Government Relations in a timely manner about political processes and communications coming out of APH and government offices.
Communicate with all state-based officers and senior executive personnel who are responsible for facilitating good government relations with State governments.
Facilitate and manage a comprehensive CRM database to capture all relevant government relations communications, across all divisions and within THQ.
Draft relevant communications, upon request of HoD, to politicians and their key support and advisory staff
Secure meetings with MPs at the request of Head of Government Relations.
Government Relations and Political Advocacy Development
Development and maintenance of political understanding within Salvation Army departments
Advocacy
Contribute to the development of a prioritised advocacy strategy that is consistent with The Salvation Army mission and values and promotes social justice.
Contribute to the development and implementation of a framework that supports effective political advocacy across Australia
Assist unspecific political campaigns aligned to The Salvation Army mission and values
Work closely with Policy and Advocacy team.
Engagement and influence in public policy debate
Maintain existing contacts and relationships to contribute to policy debate Work closely with The Salvation Army Policy and Advocacy team to ensure specialist policy expertise is available to influence government decision making and when required represent The Salvation Army in sector and government bodies
Ensure that The Salvation Army is across developments in the specialist sectors we operate in as well as social, political and economic developments affecting these sector.
Qualifications And Experience Required
Experience in political and government advocacy
Experience in research around political processes and related policy issues
Understanding of the mission and ministry of The Salvation Army
Requirements For The Role

Current drivers license.
