The Opportunity
Reporting to the Assistant General Counsel - APAC, with a dotted line to the Director of Government Relations, the Government Relations Manager will play a pivotal role in shaping and enhancing James Hardie’s engagement with local, state and federal government entities, business leaders and community stakeholders in Australia and New Zealand (ANZ).
You will analyse, assess and propose solutions to legislative and regulatory proposals to the business and key stakeholders. This will include drafting and assisting in the preparation of submissions for relevant consultation processes.
You will also represent James Hardie at key government, business and community initiatives, charitable/philanthropic events, industry trade association meetings and conferences, and other external functions to communicate and demonstrate James Hardie’s purpose and vision. Building and maintaining relationships to support our manufacturing operations in Parramatta (NSW) and Carole Park (QLD) will be key with a particular focus on local policymakers in the Western Sydney region where we are also looking forward to activating our company purpose of building a better future for all™ through our major sponsorship partnership with the Parramatta Eels.
What You’ll Do
Lead James Hardie’s government affairs and stakeholder management activities at the federal, state and local levels with an initial emphasis on Western Sydney
Partner with the Assistant General Counsel - APAC, Director of Government Relations, members of the Legal and Compliance Department and other business functions in planning, coordinating, executing and managing James Hardie’s government relations activities, including lobbying, strategic outreach to government officials and other stakeholders, events attendance, message development, issue management, consultation submissions, policy communications and thought leadership
Develop strategies to support the business based on policy analysis of multiple public policy issues at the local and state levels of government including, but not limited to, building codes, sustainability, workforce development, environmental, health and safety, transportation, and supply chain
Provide internal stakeholders information, guidance and counsel on public policy initiatives that may have an impact on the company’s business operations and strategy
Maintain a comprehensive understanding of legislation, emerging issues and industry trends, ensuring the Assistant General Counsel - APAC, Director of Government Relations and relevant stakeholders are informed of the significance, relevance and business impact/s in a timely manner
Build content for advocacy campaigns, providing strategic input on engaging in campaigns and coalitions and executing campaigns in collaboration with industry trade associations and other relevant external partners through James Hardie’s footprint in ANZ
Represent James Hardie at political events, charitable/philanthropic events, industry trade association meetings and conferences and other functions
Track, monitor and act on pending and enacted legislation, regulations and governmental activities based on input from internal departments, business units, lobbyists and associations
Develop and execute a plan to proactively establish and maintain relationships with federal, state and local elected officials on policies that could influence the growth and competitiveness of James Hardie
Assist in the selection, engagement and management of external government relations advisors and consultants as necessary
What you’ll bring (ideally)
Degree qualified in Law is preferable, alternatively qualifications in Economics or Politics also suitable
Minimum 6 years work experience including demonstrated experience in government relations and/or public affairs (whether working for a company, in government, for an industry or trade association or for a government relations firm)
Knowledge of public policy and familiarity with legislative and regulatory processes
Excellent communicator who can analyse, interpret and present legislation both written and spoken, with the proven ability to advocate, negotiate and influence stakeholders i.e. Ministers, Advisors, Department Secretaries etc.
Detail-oriented with solid organisation skills and the ability to multitask under pressure
Willing to travel up to 40% of time for business purposes across Sydney, Western Sydney, QLD, and NZ
