Requisition No: +05
Executive Division: Medical Services
Division: Medical Workforce
Program: Medical Workforce
Department: Medical Workforce Unit
Enterprise Agreement: Doctors in Training (Victorian Public Health Secto
Job Function: Medical
Project:
Location: Bacchus Marsh
Employment Type: Fixed Term, Full-Time 6-18 months (Commencing August 2025)
Salary: HM13-20

About the role:
The Bacchus Marsh (BM) campus at Western Health offers a rare introduction to rural generalist experience in a location close to Melbourne. We employ a broad group of clinicians, including all allied health disciplines and pharmacy onsite, and promote a strong culture of teamwork, adopting the principle that we are all part of a large work family that respects and supports each other.

Two HMO positions are available commencing August 2025. The roles cover 2 key areas of the hospital. HMOs are expected to work in the Urgent Care Centre (UCC) and cover the Medical Surgical Ward (MSU). Rostering is only on weekdays (business hours, Monday to Friday), one role will be AM and the other PM on a rotating roster. There are noe after-hours requirements. We welcome both full-time and part time applications, and are flexible at accommodating individual personal needs. Appointments to BM will be for a minimum 6 months but there is the potential to extend to 12 or 18 months if desired.

When working on the 18-bed MSU, the successful applicants will be caring for low-acuity, low-complexity patients typically comprising:

1-2 UCC short-stay
3-4 general medical/rehabilitation
2 palliative care
1 drug and ******* detox
8-10 post operative surgical inpatients (orthopaedic, ENT, urology, general surgery)

The ward role will be well supported and supervised by the admitting GPs/physicians and surgical teams including an on-site surgical registrar, ward GPs/Physicians and Urgent Care Career Medical Officer’s (CMOs).

In the UCC you will experience a wide range of interesting and varied clinical presentations that are mixed (but predominantly low) acuity. You will have ample opportunity to initiate and be involved in the care of a diverse mix of patients, including children. Approximately 30% of the presentations to UCC are Paediatric. You will be well supported by Urgent Care CMO’s and there is a direct phone line to Sunshine and Footscray Emergency Departments. Specialty registrars are also available for 24/7 phone consult support.

We have an active Emergency simulation program providing regular opportunities to develop clinical and management skills, and consolidate learning. There will be 5 hours/week of protected teaching time and all local specialties will participate in the education program. There are many opportunities to be involved in quality improvement, and morbidity and mortality meetings to help broaden your experience.

The Medical-Surgical Unit and Urgent Care Department Placement Experience at Bacchus Marsh can be credited towards a Rural Generalist Term (RACGP and ACRRM) or Training towards ACEM Emergency Certificate and Diploma. For a suitable candidate who is interested in doing the Diploma we could offer a 12 month position instead of 6. There are also opportunities for early exposure to your discipline of choice prior to a rural generalist advanced skill year (anaesthetics, obstetrics, emergency or palliative care). Potential candidates can express their interest in pursuing either the certificate or diploma in advance at the time of application or once they have commenced their role with us when an individual learning plan will be created in conjunction with the Director of UCC.
