Summerhill Market is a boutique grocery store chain in Toronto specializing in scratch-made prepared foods and on-trend ingredients. Our stores go above and beyond a typical grocery store by offering an extensive rotating selection of ready-to-eat gourmet meals, freshly baked goods, and curated, hard-to-find groceries.
Position Summary
Reporting to the Director of HR, the HR Generalist will support the full employee lifecycle for our food production teams located at our Commissary and Bakery Kitchen sites. This role is an ideal fit for an HR professional who thrives in fast-paced production environments and brings experience in full-cycle HR support—including hiring, performance management, terminations, training, policy implementation, and health & safety initiatives.
The HR Generalist will partner closely with Operations and Production leadership to enhance workforce engagement, compliance, and performance while helping to foster a strong, values-driven workplace culture.
Preference will be given to candidates with prior experience supporting HR functions in a food production, manufacturing, or similar industrial setting.Key Responsibilities
Manage end-to-end recruitment and offboarding for production staff: job postings, candidate screening, interviews, job offers, onboarding, and terminations.
Provide day-to-day HR support on matters including performance management, disciplinary actions, coaching, and policy adherence.
Champion a safe and compliant work environment, including the coordination of food safety and health & safety training, and participation in JHSC inspections and meetings.
Collaborate with production supervisors and managers to support change management initiatives that impact people, workflow, or process improvements.
Support and maintain accurate employee records, including contracts, policy acknowledgments, training certifications, and attendance documentation.
Administer and support the roll-out of HR policies and procedures, ensuring understanding and compliance across the production teams.
Facilitate and coordinate employee training programs, including onboarding, refresher courses, and job-specific skills development.
Assist in planning team-building and employee recognition activities that support workplace engagement and retention.
Act as a liaison between HR and production leadership, ensuring open communication and alignment on people priorities.
Leverage HRIS and other systems to maintain data integrity and streamline HR administration.
Provide support on additional HR projects and initiatives as required.
Qualifications & Skills
2–3+ years of full-cycle Human Resources experience, ideally within a food production, manufacturing, or industrial setting.
Post-secondary education in Human Resources or a related field; CHRP designation or HRPA membership is an asset.
Strong working knowledge of HR disciplines including recruitment, employee relations, health & safety, food safety, training, policy development, and performance management.
Proven ability to manage terminations and progressive discipline processes in compliance with employment standards and internal policies.
Hands-on experience administering and maintaining employee data in HRIS platforms and handling sensitive information with discretion.
Confident, professional, and approachable communicator with the ability to build trusted relationships across all levels of staff.
Excellent organizational and time-management skills with strong attention to detail.
Ability to travel between multiple Summerhill Market sites within the GTA.
A proactive, can-do attitude with a strong desire to contribute to an evolving HR function in a growing organization.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office; ability to learn new systems quickly.
