Position Overview
A Senior Insurance Accountant is a key member of the accounting team responsible for managing and maintaining the financial records of an insurance company based in Wilmington, DE. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of GAAP and STAAT principles and possess excellent skills in debits and credits, insurance accounting, and reconciliation. This role requires a detail-oriented individual with the ability to work independently and collaboratively to drive accurate and timely financial reporting. The Senior Insurance Accountant will also be responsible for implementing and managing various financial projects and working closely with other departments to ensure compliance with company policies and procedures.
Key Responsibilities
• Ensure accurate and timely financial reporting in compliance with GAAP and company policies
• Manage and maintain general ledger accounts and perform monthly reconciliations
• Analyze and interpret financial data to identify variances and trends
• Assist with the implementation and migration of new accounting systems and processes
• Prepare and review journal entries and assist with month-end and year-end close processes
• Collaborate with other departments to provide financial analysis and support for business decisions
• Identify areas for process improvements and implement solutions to enhance efficiency and accuracy
• Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations and assist with audits
• Train and mentor junior accounting staff
Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
• CPA certification preferred
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in insurance accounting
• Strong knowledge of GAAP and STAAT principles
• Proficiency in debits and credits and general ledger maintenance
• Experience with GL systems and financial reporting tools
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
• Ability to work independently and in a team environment
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy
• Experience with loss prevention and risk management is a plus
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
