About The Job
Job summary
Interns provide support to our Casework, Legal and Investigations teams. The role is challenging and varied. One day you might be carrying out legal research on a developing area of law, another you might be examining material and compiling a summary or chronology, assisting in an interview with an applicant or witness, or involved in our interactions with experts from a range of forensic and scientific disciplines. You will certainly be responsible for answering queries from potential applicants and for preparing our monthly legal update and you may be expected to carry out an independent research project to support the work of the CCRC.

Job Description
The Intern reports to the Senior Lawyer and provides casework assistance in response to requests. Interns will be provided with a mentor to support their research project work.
The role of the Intern is two part- firstly to provide casework assistance to Case Review Managers (CRM) in their review of cases and to Commissioners and the Legal Team. The second part will be to complete a research project agreed at the outset of the internship.
Interns will have the opportunity to develop skills acquired during their vocational training. The key tasks of case review may include:
• Under supervision investigating lines of enquiry, assimilating and evaluating potentially extensive and complex material and information relevant to the case, re-evaluating as necessary during the course of the review
• To undertake a research project based on the work of the CCRC. The project scope, plan and output will be agreed at the outset of the internship
• Communicate effectively with Commission staff, Commissioners, applicants, their representatives, appropriate public and private bodies and individuals associated with the case taking into account the potentially conflicting needs of external parties and the Commission
• Undertake other legal and other research
• Reviewing papers and files from external bodies
• Preparing summaries and chronologies
• Ensure compliance with the Commission’s obligations on disclosure, security and confidentiality of information
• Assisting CRMs and Investigations Advisers to interview and take statements from applicants, witnesses and other relevant parties
• Ensure compliance with the Commission’s obligations under the Code of Practice for Victims
• Assist the Case Review Manager in drafting Provision and final Statement of Reasons (PSOR & SOR)
• Keep up to date with developing law, practice and policy
• As may from time to time be appropriate:
• serve on, and/or provide assistance to, in-house working groups
• prepare and deliver training and case related presentations to colleagues.
Person specification
Essential criteria:
• Lead: Recently completed (within last 2 years) (or will complete by March of current year) the bar course / the legal practice course / both SQE1 and SQE2
• A good understanding of the legal framework of the CCRC and the legal restrictions and powers granted to it
• Strong oral and written communication skills reflecting the need to communicate effectively with applicants and potential applicants, their representatives, and other stakeholders
• Competency in the use of up-to-date IT equipment and packages
• Ability to manage a challenging portfolio of work including varied tasks with competing deadlines and conflicting priorities
• Ability to operate effectively in a remote working environment.
• An ability to act on initiative within the boundaries of the CCRC’s case procedures and agreed tasks
• Commitment to the development of your own knowledge and skills.
