The Ministry of Jobs Economy, Trade and Immigration is looking for two (2) Lead Investigators within the OHS Program Delivery Branch


As a member of a multidisciplinary Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) team, the incumbent leads investigations into fatal and serious workplace incidents. This role is responsible for all aspects of an investigation from initial assignment and incident response to interviewing injured workers, families, or next of kin. Fatality and serious incident investigations are complex and require a forensic level of detail and analysis.


Lead Investigators have broad legislative authorities to engage with employers from various industries, to reduce risk and keep workplaces healthy and safe through enforcement and education. OHS Officers are required to become Alberta Peace Officers- Level 2

As a Lead Investigator appointed on behalf of the Government of Alberta you will continue to make a positive, tangible difference by:


Leading comprehensive and unbiased investigations into reportable incidents, ensuring a safe work environment is being maintained and potential work site hazards, risks, and /or controls are identified.
Ensuring all workplaces understand their responsibilities under the OHS Act, regulation and Code.
Issuing tickets, orders, and administrative penalties to ensure compliance with the OHS Act, regulation and Code
Promoting and supporting initiatives that foster safer workplaces.
Modeling the values of respect, integrity, accountability, and excellence in all interactions.
Prepare cases for prosecution and provide evidence in court, as required.
Take immediate action to control imminent danger situations at worksites.
Perform unscheduled after-hours work, when required.
Perform scheduled on-call shifts (Friday-Friday) requiring scene attendance outside of standard work hours.
Perform additional duties as required.
As a Lead Investigator you must have the ability to work effectively in both a team setting and independently in the field conducting serious incident investigations, providing presentations and participating in various safety and health related projects. This includes liaising with internal and external stakeholders such as staff, OHS Compliance, third-party subject matter experts, and Specialized Prosecutions Services within the Ministry of Justice, particularly in cases where charges under the Occupational Health and Safety Act are pursued.


There will be occasional exposure to emotionally stressful or traumatic situations, frequent travel while working alone in the field, and extended work hours.

Qualifications
Related degree or diploma plus related industry experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Requires at least 3 years of directly related investigation experience.


Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:


1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
1 year of experience for 1 year of education.
The successful candidate must successfully complete the Peace Officer training program and be able to be designated as a Peace Officer by the Solicitor General.


The following knowledge or experiences are considered as assets:


Knowledge and application of relevant OHS legislation.
Experience in a related field or industry.
Experience working with health and safety in a variety of industry sectors.
Experience conducting inspections, investigations, and/or engaging in compliance or enforcement activities, including knowledge of both civil and penal proceedings.
Experience effectively managing a high caseload, file management, and regulatory report writing.
Demonstrated experience working within a regulatory environment.

Notes
Two permanent full-time positions working 36.25 hours per week (8:15 to 4:30), Monday to Friday. Please note, successful candidates will be required to work occasional evenings and/or weekends.


These positions will be based at 727 – 7th Ave SW in Calgary, Alberta.

The final candidates for this position will be asked to undergo an academic check, reference checks, and provide a suitable security screening/criminal record check, and may be asked to complete a written exercise and/or assessment.


Final candidates will also be asked to provide a Driver's Abstract. Travel is involved and a valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license is required. Successful candidates will be required to be part of an on-call/standby roster. Although a Government of Alberta vehicle may be provided, use of your own personal vehicle may be necessary.


These positions are a part of a unionized workforce and is covered under the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE Collective Agreement).
