Job Description
This role is based on a scenic yet remote coastal location, often part of a marine wildlife reserve. The lighthouse serves as a beacon not only for ships but also for conservation activities, with seasonal migrations, marine mammals, and seabird populations to monitor. Your work helps scientists and government agencies gather valuable data while preserving the operational integrity of a historic lighthouse.
Key Responsibilities:
Lighthouse Operation: Ensure the light system (automated or manual) is functional, solar panels are cleaned, and battery backups are working.
Wildlife Observation: Monitor and document sightings of whales, dolphins, seals, sea turtles, and migratory seabirds. Maintain observation logs and transmit data to ecological teams.
Habitat Caretaking: Prevent human interference, report pollution, track signs of invasive species, and help sustain nesting areas and flora.
Routine Maintenance: Keep the lighthouse, its outbuildings, and grounds clean and functional. Tasks may include painting, basic carpentry, weatherproofing, and generator checks.
Visitor Protocols: Greet occasional ecotourists, researchers, or photography groups with safety and historical briefings. Some locations are open to small public groups seasonally.
Who Should Apply:
Environmental science enthusiasts, birdwatchers, or anyone with a love for quiet coastal environments.
Solo individuals or couples comfortable with off-grid living.
People who enjoy solitude, minimalism, and eco-conscious lifestyles.
Retired marine professionals or rangers looking to contribute part-time.
Job Requirements:
Environmental Knowledge: Understanding of marine and bird ecosystems is preferred but not mandatory (training may be provided).
Basic Maintenance Skills: Comfortable using hand tools, maintaining small equipment, and handling basic repairs.
Record Keeping: Ability to maintain detailed logs and use simple reporting tools (tablet or waterproof notebooks).
Self-Sufficiency: Experience managing food, water, power, and emergencies independently.
Daily Life & Routine:
Wake at dawn, check the lighthouse systems, and perform brief maintenance.
Use binoculars or scopes to log marine life sightings and behaviors.
Prepare meals, read, or document weather and tide patterns.
Monitor nesting sites, clean solar panels, and report issues via satellite communication.
Watch stunning sunsets and enjoy uninterrupted views of nature’s rhythm.
